Faith, Love, and Family by Bill Tubman

I had a conversation with a Ghanaian doctor I know about why he doesn’t go to church. His answer surprised me.

He told me how his family was torn apart by a pastor who said their mother was a witch blocking their blessings, and that the curse could only be broken if they gave more money. Some believed it, others, like him, stood by their mother and saw it as manipulation, not faith.

The damage to their family was real.

I also know another Ghanaian family whose daughter has struggled with mental health for years but has never seen a professional. Instead, they keep giving money to a pastor promising healing through prayer alone. The suffering goes on, but the giving never stops.

This isn’t about blaming faith. I love my faith, my walk, and I’m grateful for my pastor, Thomas Shelwah, who once said, “When something goes wrong, it’s not always our job to ask why, it’s our job to show up with love.”

Too often, I’ve seen judgment instead of compassion, shame instead of care, pushing people away from faith when they need it most. I think it’s so important for us to make sure our journey to righteousness doesn’t turn into self-righteousness, where we become the reason people feel driven from their places of worship.

That has to break God’s heart.

I don’t have all the answers, but I believe God called us to agape love, the kind that welcomes and walks alongside, not shames or separates.

If you’ve been hurt in God’s name, I’m sorry. Your pain is real and you’re not alone.

If you’re still searching, I hope you find faith that brings peace and people who love you without conditions.

Because at the core of it all, love really is the whole point.

Someone said to me recently, “You can’t have wealth without money.” And I get where that comes from, money can make life easier, more secure, more comfortable. But I think there’s another kind of wealth that people often overlook.

My mom and my grandmother moved here in July, and we spent the last six months of my grandmother’s life together. In that time, there was laughter, deep conversations, quiet moments, and a closeness that’s hard to put into words. That time was a gift, one I’ll always carry with me.

For me, that was wealth.

People often assume money and wealth are the same, but they’re not. People can have money and still feel empty, disconnected, or alone. And people can have very little money but be surrounded by love, purpose, and deep relationships. That, too, is real wealth.

This isn’t to dismiss the value of money, we all know it’s necessary. But I just want to offer another perspective. Sometimes, the richest moments in life come in ways that money can’t buy.

In an African village, a young boy caught a bird and approached the wise Zoe, who was sitting quietly under a kola tree. He held the bird in his hands and asked, "Is it alive or dead?"

Zoe looked at him thoughtfully and replied, "The bird represents love. Its fate depends on your hands. Hold it gently, and it will thrive. Crush it, and it will perish."

The boy slowly opened his hands, and the bird flew away into the sky.

Zoe smiled and said, "Love and relationships thrive with care, attention, and understanding. But if neglected or taken for granted, they will not survive."

I am grateful that my gift for storytelling and words can make a difference. Often, I feel inspired to share encouragement on social media or in personal conversations, and I believe that’s the gift I’ve been given. I’ve received messages from people who say my words have helped them through dark times, even stopping some from ending their lives. Sometimes, people reach out years later, grateful for a kindness I don’t even remember giving.

So often, we measure our worth and success by material things. But I’ve come to see that my creativity and deep empathy are the real tools of my purpose. I want to remind each of you: kindness costs nothing to give, but it’s priceless to those who receive it. Our small acts of generosity ripple out in ways we can’t imagine, even impacting generations to come.

One man once told me that his entire family owes their lives to my father, who gave him $100 years ago. He said his grandchildren wouldn’t be here without that sacrifice. To pay it forward, he gifted me $400 one day, a blessing that arrived just when I needed it most.

For me, life’s experiences are worth any price we pay. While there are moments when it feels overwhelming, I wouldn't trade this journey for anything. I’m grateful to be alive in this time and space, sharing it with all of you. Every high and low, every twist and turn is part of the beauty of living. Sharing my experiences, especially the tough ones, is how I cope. It's just who I am. Exactly a year ago, my life changed in an instant due to one of the most traumatic events I've ever faced. I couldn’t fully grasp what had happened, and in those moments, everything I knew seemed to shift.

When I shared my story, I was met with an overwhelming wave of support. I truly believed that everyone who heard it was in my corner. After all, what had happened was undeniably awful.

But I was mistaken. Not everyone saw it that way. Some questioned what I might have done to deserve it. I even heard whispers of, “There’s got to be more to the story.”

Pastor Thomas Shelwah, a dear friend and my pastor, once preached a sermon that resonates with me to this day. He spoke about how, when something happens to someone, instead of offering prayers and support, people often search for reasons to justify why it happened.

“You know his parents did that...”
“She used to be like this…”
“That’s why you don’t do certain things…”

And the most common one: “I beg you ya, I bet there’s more to that story.”( In my Liberian accent)

The truth is, terrible things can happen to good people, just as good things can happen to those we might not see as deserving. Life is a blend of experiences for all of us. I’m not perfect, and I’ve likely engaged in that kind of judgment myself in the past.

But what stands out to me now, after everything I've been through this past year, is the kindness and sincerity from those who truly rallied around me. I’m blessed to have people to celebrate with during the good times and to lean on during the tough ones.

I pray that we all take a moment to put ourselves in the shoes of someone going through a difficult time. Instead of rushing to judgment, let’s choose compassion and grace.
