Tuning In: Amy Grantham @_amygrantham

“In music, a ‘motif’ is a short musical idea. It contains elements of harmony and rhythm which represent some of the components that make up the overall composition from which it sprang. I began making my motifs in the fall of 2023. These pieces are not motifs in any literal sense of the word, but they did feel to me as if they were connected to my larger works on paper which I refer to as my ‘transcriptions of sound.’ Small parts of a larger whole which stand and sound beautifully all on their own.”

Exhibited for the first time, Grantham’s pastel Motifs demonstrate the artist’s long-standing exploration of form, colour and music. While not strictly synaesthetic, her compositions evoke a vivid intersection of sound and image, where music transforms into line, shape, and hue.

“I feel we have much to learn from colour. Chagall once noted: All colours are the friends of their neighbours and the lovers of their opposites! Colour teaches us about the importance of both harmony and dissonance, and how darkness makes the light shine more brightly.” Black and blue are important colours for Grantham. Black because it is supportive of all colours around it and forms an anchor that is both a beginning and an end, and blue, which the artist describes as “especially beautiful” because its depths plunge deep into darkness, but its heights burst through into light. “It encompasses every emotion and therefore feels essential in a larger vision of harmony.”

In Tuning In, Grantham’s chromatic works open a space between sound and sight, perception and interpretation, where the invisible can be seen through its sensory resonance.

Tuning In is a show about the visualisation of the immaterial but also emphasises how the artists push the boundaries of the materiality of their media whether wool, cotton, acrylic, pastel, gouache, gold, silver, stone, wood and more. Their alchemical artistry is an absolute joy to see and feel. Brava @ceciliacharlton @_amygrantham and @paolamcbay

One week to go!!! ✨

Tuning In: Vibrations, Frequencies and Harmonies

This exhibition brings together Paola Bay, Cecilia Charlton and Amy Grantham, three contemporary artists whose work explores vibrations, frequencies, energies and connections that exist beyond the immediately visible, occupying the space between the material and immaterial, the earthly and the otherworldly.

Through painting, drawing and weaving, the artists respond to the physical and metaphysical qualities of the world around us. Geometry, sound, colour, a deep understanding of the materials they use and intuition become ways of sensing what cannot always be seen or explained.

From cosmic rhythms and energetic patterns to the inner life of matter, Tuning In invites you to consider, through the work of these three phenomenal artists, other ways of experiencing the world.

Come and tune in!

We are thrilled to announce that we now officially represent Amy Grantham! @_amygrantham ✨

Grantham’s work explores a compelling dialogue between sound and image, translating the structure and emotion of music into layered compositions of color, line, and form. Her practice transforms rhythm into visual harmony—where abstraction becomes both deeply felt and intuitively constructed.

Working primarily in pastel on paper, Grantham achieves a remarkable depth and luminosity, pushing the boundaries of the medium. Her compositions draw on traditions of abstraction, with echoes of Orphism and Synchromism, creating works that resonate between historical influence and contemporary expression.

Opening January 21st at Findlay Galleries, the new exhibition by New York based artist Amy Grantham, whose layered abstractions draw inspiration from music, movement, and the architecture of sound. Influenced by Bach’s Goldberg Variations and the legacy of early abstraction, Grantham’s richly saturated pastel works translate musical structure into vibrant visual harmony.

One of the great advantages of living near New York, NY is being able to drop into the city for special event and meetings.

Last Friday I had the pleasure of visiting with Amy Grantham at her show of glorious chalk pastel drawings. Her color fields and play of flat shapes with volumetric forms and rhythmic patterns was delightful, an oasis of joy in the city… extra-appreciated in these challenging times.
Highly recommend.

Shout out for @handmadeframesinc for perfect handling of Amy’s works. Framing unfixed pastels is an art unto itself, demanding to the point that many shops decline to handle such things. That some of the works are so large is an additional challenge, handled impeccably here, befitting Amy’s caressed-into-being surfaces.
