We are not immune to what’s happening in Minnesota — and all across this nation. As 🧊 continues to terrorize and target the most vulnerable among us, we remain grateful for the indie bookstores in Minnesota that have shown up for their communities, providing support and resources to Minnesotans in need.

That’s why we want to support some of the amazing Minnesotan indies on the frontlines. We’re giving away three prize packs of books written by diverse Minnesota-based authors to educators, and each pack will be purchased directly from the featured bookstores. If you’re not an educator, consider supporting these bookstores with your own dollars so that they can continue their essential work!

Happy Pride to readers of all backgrounds!

We're highlighting collections of titles for each color of the pride flag, along with a little history about the color itself (what can we say, spreading knowledge is our whole thing :P )

Paraphrasing from @verywellmind ,

"Black and Brown Represents People of Color.
The Philadelphia Pride Flag was designed by the Philadelphia Office of LGBT Affairs and was done in partnership with advertising agency Tierney. It was introduced at a City Hall ceremony in June of 2017. The flag showed the traditional six rainbow colors in horizontal stripes, with a black and a brown stripe atop them."

The first time I visited New York as an adult, in 2017, I walked off my redeye from Los Angeles and went directly to Queens College to spend the day in the Louis Armstrong archives. If you’ve been around for A WHILE a while, you might know that visit had been a dream of mine for a long time, and it was easily one of the great days of my life (photo evidence by @dippermouth).
I don’t know if time is a flat circle or if the stars are aligning just right, but it’s been another eight years and it finally feels like all the good things are coming together. I’m working like mad in my free time on a book about Pops and the Cold War, and I’m starting a substack about it (see the link you know where; amazing art by @_anghost), AND I’m part of the new cohort of Real Ambassadors docents at @louisarmstronghouse. I get to spend time in the museum and talk to people in the community and learn from people who know so much more about Louis than I do, and that’s a great gift.
So much else is bad, but this is really, really good, and having a pocket of happiness right now feels like a miracle. I’m grabbing it with both hands. Sharone looks up with unnameable emotion at a much larger than life photo of Louis Armstrong on the wall in the special collections section of the Queens College library. She holds a trumpet in one white gloved hand. The other gloved hand rests on Louis’s chin.

If I take seriously bell hooks’ idea of centering the margins, that comes with a commitment to exploring and learning from concepts that originate in identities and experiences different from my own. I thought this small little book was such a wonderful opportunity to do that. I think what it means to feel our bodies and protect our bodies is best articulated by disability activists, and I’m grateful I got to learn from the wisdom in this book. I’ve been curious about comprehensive sexuality education for many years now, and reading more about how to facilitate these challenging and extraordinarily personal conversations with young people has been so rewarding 💐

Excited to be teaming up with my incredibly talented friend @_anghost to offer a pair of @augsburglgbtqia workshops next week for National Coming Out Day. In part one, we’ll talk storytelling. The next day, we’ll take those stories and make zines! I think this is going to be a lot of fun. All @augsburguniversity folks are welcome!
