Have you ever wished you couldmake something beautiful and useful out of old clothing, sheets, or the other scrapped fabric you have lying around? Join Visiting Artist Lena Kolb (@_arachne__) for a week-long exploration of rag rug weaving to turn those old textiles into a hand-crafted woven rug to furnish your home! In this workshop, you'll learn to weave with upcycled fabrics on a floor loom and transform discarded textiles into unique, durable rugs full of color and texture. Lena learned to weave by apprenticing a rag rug weaver in New Orleans for six years—so whether you're a beginner or an experienced weaver, this class will offer plenty of new insight, hands-on guidance, and immersive studio time for in-depth exploration of rag rug weaving! Lena is based in Philadelphia and visiting Pittsburgh to spend a week with us teaching this class—don't miss this chance to learn from her decade of experience as a weaver! New-In: Everything coming into focus, at last, via Bill Nace and the latest on #openmouth + Three Lobed. Look at that Philly live shot. Looks like Chester on a good day. Or possibly Marcus Hook on a particularly bad night. Full Size features folks from Heavenly Bodies, Stiff Curls and maestro Bill Nace. Believe this is their second release. And an amazing Folded Group 7”, which is hyper-limited and features Nace and Lena Kolb. These recordings center on the latter’s work as a weaver. Instrumentation includes loom, viola, loops, synth and vox. _Folded Group_ was also the title of the recent group show Nace and Kim Gordon organized over at Amant in East Williamsburg (a block that feels like East LA). Had assumed the “fold” reference in that group show had to do more with thus very smart description taken from the press release: “To be folded into a practice, a community, or a set of shared enthusiasms is to enter what the dictionary defines as a fold: a group bound by common activity or belief. Folding also points to printed matter, where information is literally carried in a crease: what is folded is not available at a glance, but must be opened, handled, and attended to”; only now realizing the “fold” may reference Lena’s work more expressly! This duo furthers Nace/Open Mouth’s ongoing thinking and performing outside of the box and comfort zone. Congrats to this new duo and the latest on Open Mouth.
