The ACE Café is reopening! ☕

Africa’s nuclear energy conversation is becoming increasingly important as countries across the continent explore nuclear power as part of their long-term energy mix.

For this reason, we have brought together a panel of experts with expertise ranging from nuclear science and technical capacity to energy investment, nuclear programme development, and continental nuclear governance to examine the opportunities, challenges, and practical considerations shaping Africa's nuclear energy future.

Pull up a chair and join us tomorrow, August 20, at the ACE Café at 2:30 PM GMT!

🇺🇳🇺🇳! The biggest thing I learned from working , volunteering and attending these conferences, summits in United Nations spaces is that youth leadership isn’t something we wait for; it’s something we actively practice.

Over the past few years, my involvement in global development and policy has profoundly changed how I view change, leadership, and impact. I’ve discovered that the most valuable lessons often aren’t found in reports but are learned through attentive listening, careful observation, and consistent presence.

This journey has taught me several important things:

🇺🇳Young people belong at decision-making tables. It’s crucial that young individuals are seen not just as symbolic figures but as true partners in shaping the systems that will affect their future. Witnessing how youth perspectives can alter discussions and inject much-needed urgency into critical conversations highlights how meaningful inclusion leads to better outcomes.
🇺🇳Stories are more powerful than policy language. While policy frameworks and indicators are important, it’s the lived experiences and human stories behind the data that truly resonate with people and create lasting impact.
🇺🇳Systems change is a slow, nonlinear process. Real transformation doesn’t happen overnight. It demands patience, persistence, and the resolve to keep showing up, even when progress seems imperceptible.
🇺🇳Sometimes you have to build your own seat at the table. Not every environment is designed with young people in mind. Leadership, in this context, often involves creating new spaces when existing ones don’t meet the need. We don’t always have to wait for an invitation.
🇺🇳You do not have to wait to lead. Leadership isn’t defined by a title or age. It begins the moment you decide to take responsibility for something you care about.

Different countries and continents need a different approach to developing sustainable energy systems.

For some, decarbonisation is easier than others.

With the African content, the Africa Sustainable Energy Centre has laid out a range of frameworks and approaches that help lay out a path towards a more sustainable future, catering to the nuances, strengths and weaknesses of energy systems and markets as they exist today.

Much of the global energy conversation takes place in technical language: megawatts, capacity factors, grid stability, market mechanisms. These concepts are essential for the professionals working within the sector, but they can create a distance between the system itself and the people who ultimately depend on it.

One of the ideas increasingly discussed within the World Energy Council is the importance of “humanising energy.” In practical terms, this means communicating energy not just as infrastructure and policy, but in terms of how it shapes people’s daily lives, livelihoods and opportunities.

When the demand side of the energy system becomes more visible and relatable (households, businesses, communities and industries that rely on reliable power) it helps create a clearer understanding of why energy decisions matter.

That awareness can have ripple effects across the entire value chain. Greater public and commercial engagement with energy issues tends to influence how policymakers prioritise infrastructure, how investors view long-term projects and how institutions approach system planning.

In that sense, humanising energy is not just a communications exercise. It can play a role in aligning the broader ecosystem around the importance of building resilient, reliable and accessible energy systems for future generations.

Driving change in the energy sector often comes down to communication.

Different stakeholders respond to different forms of language and incentives. What resonates with engineers, regulators, financiers or politicians is rarely the same.

For policymakers, the conversation might centre on macroeconomic impacts: power outages leading to lost productivity, reduced industrial output and ultimately depreciation in GDP. For industry stakeholders, the discussion may focus more on operational reliability, cost stability or long-term investment confidence.

The underlying goal may be the same (improving energy systems and accelerating development) but the framing needs to match the priorities of the audience.

This is one of the areas the Africa Sustainable Energy Centre (ASEC) has been focusing on through its frameworks. By translating complex energy challenges into the language that different institutional and industrial stakeholders understand, the aim is to make meaningful behaviour change not just desirable, but achievable.

Energy systems are often discussed in terms of policy, investment and strategy. But behind every megawatt of capacity are engineers, technicians and operators who understand how the infrastructure actually works in the real world.

When those voices are missing from policy discussions and boardroom decisions, there is always a risk that strategy becomes detached from operational reality.

Bringing technical professionals into these conversations helps ground decision-making in practical experience. The people designing, installing and maintaining energy infrastructure often see the constraints, opportunities and unintended consequences long before they appear in reports or models.

For a sector as complex and consequential as energy, better outcomes usually come from combining both perspectives: strategic leadership informed by the practical insight of the people working closest to the technology itself.

Stakeholders from across Nigeria’s clean energy sector came together in Abuja to discuss the proposed solar import ban and review new research on the country’s readiness.

The consensus: encourage local manufacturing and adopt a 3–5 year phased transition for the proposed solar import ban.

The work continues.

Join the movement.
