NYFF is at its half point - they presented their centerpiece BEHEMOTH! tonight (my shot from the press conference highlights the casting director Carmen Cuba and the director and his principal cast). I’m overwhelmed by the riches of this festival. Worn down a bit after all the screenings at TIFF and NYFF, so only putting here the in-person highlights going backwards from today: the legendary Mike Leigh in conversation with Ashley Clark. I love TENDER LOVING CARE and Ashley was everything a moderator should be plus witty. Same goes to Justin Chang and the way he lead his conversation with Lee Chang-dong. Just like Leigh, Lee is a master of dry humor, and both are masters of their art. Florence Almozini lead the almost midnight Q&A w Markus Schleinzer about ROSE and I truly enjoyed both, the film and the convo. I got to meet Bobby Sommer who stars in LONDON and I’ve followed him since THE MUSEUM HOURS (pictured here with Dennis Lim and Carlos Reygadas)… and yes, the opening night film PAPER TIGER. Adam Driver is a true star and I don’t understand the lukewarm reception the film got in Cannes. (I’ve seen majority of the main slate and some currents and I can tell you, this is a good year for cinema, no matter what people have said in the Spring.) Bravo the entire programming team.
