An antique-jewelry obsessed shopper’s guide to buying old gems online. What to learn, what to avoid, trusted sellers and more.

Most importantly: Learn what you love and what’s on your list. Do you like warm-tone gold? Shopping for a chain? Open to 9k? Once you have these answers, it’ll be easier to drool at a piece in passing and send the DM for the one you really love.

Compare pricing: Some sellers consistently have reasonable prices and others consistently seem certifiably insane for what they’re charging. Pay attention to what certain pieces generally go for and choose what you’re willing to spend and who you’re willing to spend it with.

What to learn: It’s best to know the current price of gold and what it’s going for per gram, but if you know you won’t keep track of that, figure out the weight of a ring and a necklace you love and compare from there with what you want to buy. Then you’ll have a good sense of what a piece will feel like and whether you’re getting a good deal. If a seller won’t tell you the weight of a piece, red flag.

What to avoid: Avoid any forms of payment that don’t come with protection. With PayPal, for instance, I got all my money back when a seller ghosted me after paying for a piece.

What to be clear on: Patina! It’s that worn-in, lived-in look of old gold. For some, it’s the best part, and others want it polished away. Be very clear with sellers on which one you are as soon as you pay for your piece.

I came home to the perfect sweatshirt from the awesome @thegildedstitchery !! I had to capture it with four types of old cuts in my collection: OECs (top left), peruzzis (top right), antique pears (bottom left), and OMCs (bottom right).
