Presented as part of the Off programme of the Dakar Art Biennale in 2024, Zena Zeidan’s ‘Mutation’ unfolds as a visual meditation on Dakar’s architectural legacy at a moment of quiet rupture. Moving between documentation and abstraction, the series traces the afterlives of buildings once designated as national heritage, structures now dismantled or irreversibly altered despite their cultural significance. Many, conceived by leading architects, stand as markers of a modernist vision increasingly under threat.
.
Rather than simply record loss, Mutation reflects on transformation itself; how cities shift, how histories are negotiated, and what it means to preserve memory in the face of disappearance.
