“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (Jn 12:24).

Last year’s birthday post was “call to me and I will answer you” (Jer 33:3). I wanted to see the great and hidden things that I had not known. That is still my desire. But it has expanded. This may sound obvious, but in practice it never is: To be told of great and hidden things, the seed (that’s you and me) must fall into the earth and die. In the famous—and possibly over-quoted—words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, “When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.”

Now all this talk of death appears quite dreary. But in reality, “if it dies, it bears much fruit.” And what if it remains alive? It remains alone. There is an invitation to call and be answered by the Creator of all things. But if you make that call, as I have, He will bid you come and die.

I am 26, I am going into my fourth year of ministry, and I am only now starting to grasp what Jesus meant when He said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matt 16:24). I am starting to weave together the threads of crucifixion with Christ (Gal 2:20), death to sin (Rom 6:11), and the removal of my old self (Eph 4:22), so that I will see the tapestry of a life now hidden with Christ in God (Col 3:3)—a great and hidden thing that I have not known (Jer 33:3).

THE TJ’S & PJ’S PARTY IS HERE. 🛒🎀

We took our clients favorite things and turned them into the ultimate birthday sleepover — Trader Joe’s snacks, cozy PJs, crafts, movie night, and all the little details in between.

Safe to say… birthday girl approved. ✨
