Getting a custom helmet is more than just picking colors or references that you like and slapping it on your lid- it’s important to be intentional when working with each idea and find the best way to blend the art with design. Here are the 3 main areas we pour over on every project:

1) Design language- What do you want your helmet to say about you when people see it? Do you want it to look styled for racing? Maybe something creative or artistic? Do you want it to be colorful or monotone? Do you want the art to consist of sharp lines or rounded elements? Will it be reminiscent of an era or important part of your life? All of these things come together to communicate who you are without you needing to say a word. Once we have the message clarified, we need to look at the helmet itself-

2) Helmet design- Every helmet has a unique shell shape and the curves and contours are all different from model to model. Shoei helmets favor sharp lines and longer elements due to the many contours and elongated oval shape. Arai works best with shorter or rounder shapes with their smooth, circular shape with minimal contour. It’s important to work with each helmet, not try to force your ideas to fit. Finally, we need to address the most important part-

3) Personal details- A custom helmet is the most unique item in motorsport and they are most often more meaningful than the bike itself. Bringing thoughtful, intentional design to highlight your personality and the details that make you who you are is my favorite part. Colors, names, hidden elements that all tell a small story about you bring helmets to the top. This is what takes a project from a custom helmet to a work of art, for me at least.

Painted helmets are the best, but they’re even better when done with intention and relentless attention to detail. What are some of your favorite helmets from memory? They could be personal or one from your favorite moto era👇
