Today is the birthday of Walt "Wali" Neal. As someone who started my journey within the arts fairly late, unfortunately, I learned about Wali and his contributions to the Columbus art scene after his passing.

His art was influenced by Black futurism, astronomy, and nature. He was well known for his contributions to murals within the city of Columbus.

I am grateful for the opportunity to meet the people closest to Wali and to have created a documentary about him.

A defining influence in our drive to do the work that we do is for its long-term, and not just a temporary impact. In all of our projects we endeavor to help facilitate lasting legacies in the urban, regional and landscape planning realms. The Sullivant Bright Public Art & Parklet Project was one such feat.

Sullivant Avenue is renowned in Columbus as a place of authentic creativity, featuring a prominent mural and numerous custom signs. The Sullivant Bright Public Art Project was part of a larger $10 million rehabilitation program (2% of the budget devoted to public art) that began in May 2020. It utilized public art to elevate the corridor and creatively showcase where future infrastructure improvements would be installed.

As project engineers evaluated a 1.9 mile long corridor along Sullivant Avenue for necessary pedestrian upgrades, we considered public art and placemaking opportunities along the corridor, particularly where public art or a placemaking intervention could support a safer pedestrian environment. This was a brilliant opportunity to showcase our firm’s abilities to provide strategic direction for placemaking and land use issues as well as the firm’s capabilities to both develop and communicate creative concepts which contribute to community safety.

🎤 🎶 🚀 #AllStar 💪🏿💯 #iLeftMyMark ⚡️What I love most about what I do is serving as a connector between people, experiences, and opportunities. At the GCAC Big Arts Night, this #AmazinBlazin team of poets, artists, and creatives who said “yes” made the evening unforgettable. 🎯 Here’s how I leaned on three specific skills to ensure the night wasn’t just an event but an experience:

1️⃣ 💛#INVESTING in the Needs and Wants of Clients and Partners: I approached this collaboration with the Greater Columbus Arts Council (client) and ZenGenius @zengenius (contributing partner) by prioritizing clear communication and understanding their goals. From the start, I sought to meet their vision and elevate it, aligning my decisions with their needs while ensuring every partner involved felt valued and understood.

2️⃣ 🩷#INTENTIONAL Curation of the Run-of-Show: Every detail of the agenda was planned with purpose, from the lineup of 🔥 poets (Ajanaé @moonsatdusk , Kaleem @kaleemthegifted , J.Dontah @j.dontah , and Atlas @atlasthepoet ) to the sonic sounds of 🎧 Dr. View @drview1 , to the vibrant live art by 🎨 Francesca Miller @_callmefree . This intentionality transformed the evening into an immersive experience—one that blended storytelling, music, and visuals to leave a lasting #imprintofinspiration.

3️⃣ 🧡#APPLYING Color Theory for Atmosphere: To make the space as dynamic as the gifts in it, I leaned into the psychology of color. By using intentional hues, patterns, and elements, I created an aesthetic that set the tone for joy, inspiration, and connection: #Nostalgia. The visual atmosphere wasn’t just a backdrop; it was part of the storytelling, pulling people into the energy of the night.

To the GCAC team, ZenGenius, and all of the brilliant creatives who contributed—🙏🏿 thank you for trusting me to bring this vision to life. Nights like these remind me why I do what I do: to create spaces where people can Survive, Thrive, and Shine #unapologetically.

Last week, we got together to celebrate the creative soul of Columbus at GCAC’s Big Art Night Out (@artmakescbus ) . First time for me as a board member, and I’ve gotta say, it’s awesome being part of something that pushes the arts forward in our city.

Huge congrats to all the award winners, and props to my guy, Bishop (@doctor_pictures ) , for capturing the night as one of the photographers. And a special shoutout to Downtown Mike Brown (@destinationcbus ) — you deserve it, fam!
