Roads are built in layers your first layer is usually hard existing material. Then you construct your embankment in lifts of 6-8” Loose, once compacted you will lose about 2” and achieve 95% compaction before placing your next lift, you repeat this process until you reach your subgrade.
Your subgrade will follow the same steps but can range 6-12” depending on your local DOT and material requirments you must reach a 100% compaction and pass a proof roll.
Now for the asphalt! Theres more to asphalt but thats for another date!
