The w)taps parka still in Ian Brown’s outerwear rotation Though we typically think of him as closer aligned with A Bathing Ape (beyond mutual brand iconography) or perhaps NEIGHBORHOOD, Ian Brown was also an early conscript of another seminal ura-hara imprint, w)taps. The singer’s connection to Kazuki Kuraishi was no doubt the catalyst for this affiliation. Around 1999, as promotional duties for his second post-Roses LP ‘Golden Greats’ were in full swing, Brown could be seen wearing a reversible tactical parka issued by w)taps in coalition with MASTERPIECE (HECTIC), including on the cover of 06.11.99’s edition of the NME. Strange to think of w)taps on the cover of the NME— quite possibly the only ever occurrence. Flow timing is consistent with Brown’s proclamation of never needing to purchase clothes again after Feb ‘99. The jacket’s design appears to derive from the experimental two-sided treatments of the ECWCS GORE-TEX parkas by U.S. ARMY in the mid 1990s, which featured both M81/Woodland and DCU patterns as an exterior option. Camouflage selection is an interesting aspect of the w)taps/MP model. Channeling the woodland-desert combination of the U.S. Army reference, the ‘1st’ custom “TAPS pattern, which is reminiscent of the 1960s Czech Vz. 60 “Mlok” as well as a late 20th century Bulgarian Splinter variant, is recoloured with earth tones, with the Saudi Arabian grey-dominant variant of the classic six-colour “chocolate chip” desert battle dress on the reverse. This particular earth-toned ‘1st’ camo was previously deployed on a non-collaborative windbreaker and had been a staple in the w)taps VA lexicon, but the pattern itself was retired by brand come the new millennium. Over 25 years later, Ian Brown was once again photographed wearing the jacket.

Levi’s RED ss02 warped bootcut jeans Three pairs from Levi’s mainline experimental project from the early 2000s - with Italian manufacturing and details that border on artisanal. Much of the spirit of the RED line comes from referencing some of the earliest pairs of Levi’s. This early 2000s meets late 1800s makes for truly special cuts and details. The original RED collection, by Danish designer Rikke Korff, paved the way for Levi’s Engineered, with a twisted pattern inspired by a pair of heavily used 501s. Details such as bucklebacks and chains come from Levi’s apparel made for mining and other physical labour. Here we present three pairs from the Spring 2002 collection: one with a brown wax coating and orange cotton base, one with green staining and one with printed rips and patchwork.
