Dear (Public) Diary,

Something called commencement happened for us on a Saturday almost two weeks ago.

In that single day, and a few days over, I received compliments and gratitude that came from a message I hoped to deliver, as well as something beyond me.

So, for one single day, I learned to put aside my inner saboteur, and receive the compliments and gratitude given to me by my cohort and their loved ones. I told myself that it was okay, and that today was a day that I could be wholeheartedly proud of not only myself, but all the people who have walked this path as well.

I have reflected upon that day a lot, causing a realization of how I have never had a whole, single day where I didn’t cast some form of doubt in myself or doubt towards any kind words that were being given to me. Until commencement.

Honestly, I’m starting to digest how that’s kind of messed up, but also common. Even then, I can’t totally say I didn’t have any doubt that day either. I was visibly a nervous wreck under the beautiful attire and makeup, and I kept asking my parents “Was my speech really okay? Was it good? Do people mean it?”... But, really, I knew that I shouldn’t put aside the feeling that I was proud of myself.

That during this time, right now, there is no reason for you, Class of 2026, to not feel proud of yourself.

It is awesome to know that we now all own an actual, printed piece of evidence, called a ‘diploma’, proving we’ve not only earned our education, but also succeeded in the pursuit of it.

Wicked, as the Rhode Islanders would say.

However, besides the education we’ve knowingly pursued, these past few years were filled with the unknown, and a lot more than just the experience of art school. And I’m proud to see that every single person who I could fit in a conversation with during that hectic week, or now viewing their little commencement posts on social media (like I’ve done with this), had one thing to say in common; “I’m thankful for all the people who I have met at RISD.”

The warmth of knowing we’ve come out of the trenches of RISD because of the communities we’ve gained is irreplaceable.

See you in our first reunion, Class of 2026 :)

Meet Crystal Han (she/her), a senior in Textiles.

What question are you investigating in your thesis work?

What will roam and grow on the Earth thousands of years in the future, as plants and animals continue to evolve alongside human development? Invasive species, like Japanese knotweed, expand and stretch into bulbous forms. Sea creatures develop plastic skin and lurid stripes to camouflage in oceans of textile waste. Woolly beasts become overgrown, covering their beautiful patterns underneath.

These beings live not in our current world, but in the space where inquiry meets intuition, and emotional responses allow us to approach other living beings with a perspective where artists, activists, and scientists naturally converge.

What are your plans after graduation?

I will be working as a knitwear apprentice at Coach, while continuing to find and draw as many creatures as possible.
