And my year of 21 comes to a wonderful end.

I never thought I’d be the person I am today. I look in the mirror, and see I still see that shy, awkward kid who was always cooped up in her bedroom. The one who felt like they never really fit in, the one who couldn’t see the brighter side of things, the one who always felt alone no matter how many friends or family they surrounded themselves with. The one who was afraid to be different.

I’ve been through hell and back more times than not. Been through so many connections, some that I cherish to this day, and some that forced me to change. Change how I look at things, how I perceive/treat myself and others, my opinions, thoughts, people I let into my circle. Yet somehow, every trip to hell became a lesson.

Though inexplicably painful, each lesson pushed me to flourish. I transmuted all of the pain, the sorrows, and the anger through my very fingertips to create. I remember I actually played my bass so hard that my fingertips went numb and swollen from how hard I was playing one time. But that showed me I was still here. That I was still alive. And that I still have purpose.

I don’t think little me would have thought she would still be here at 22 years old. She didn’t plan for it, neither did I, but whoever put us on this planet definitely did. That’s a blessing in itself. To still be here, to stay alive.

I’m glad I stayed. Otherwise I wouldn’t have met my nephews, or been in a band, or had the chance to play shows in my hometown and in the establishment my family raised me with, or meet any of my friends I have now. And while judgement still bears its teeth at me every once in a while, I bear mine tenfold, for I deserve to exist how I am. Aggressively and unapologetically.

Here’s to all of my favorite moments from my 21st year of life, and to another trip around the sun, and many many more.
