POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

My label and studio @resistbelfast produced a video piece called "Leave no one behind" with Junior Academy of Music pupils' music, sounds and voices to inspire action for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This was included in this year's SDG Action Zone and shown alongside the UN General Assembly yesterday!

...
‘What is the value of a single life?’ is an audiovisual art piece and my submission created in collaboration with video artist Dervla Hillan. The piece contains recordings sourced online during times of lockdown from people of different countries speaking three questions in a total of 23 different languages. The questions are: “What is the value of a single life? Why is a single life valuable? Are some lives more valuable than others?”. This piece aims to address SDG 10 – Reducing Inequalities, not by providing answers but rather encouraging people to ask themselves these questions and to reflect on and try to understand the nature of equality, what is the basis of equality, and to look at why some people are treated unequally to others in society. These are complex issues but it is my hope that if people can reflect on these questions honestly, we may find answers and seek to reduce inequalities in our daily lives. If we look at our societies, we see that some people are treated differently to others. In recent focus, it is clear that racial injustice and structural racism must be urgently addressed. This piece was conceived before the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests against racial injustice spread across the globe. I was considering not posting this piece as I felt it may not be a strong enough declaration against racism and in solidarity with the protests. But, after much reflection, I realised that people of every cultural and racial identity need to reflect on themselves and their interconnections with others in terms of how we exist in society now and in terms of our shared history. Through honest inner reflection and then through embracing dialogue with people of different backgrounds, I feel that ordinary citizens of the world will be able to reduce inequalities in society. Therefore, this work ‘What is the value of a single life?’ is an anti-racist piece of art with the audio and video both emphasising the beauty in diversity of human voices and an abstract vision of peaceful coexistence
