“One quarter hour after the end of second watch, Azetla sank to his pallet on the ground, muscles worn with tension. He took a few slow breaths as he blinked at the sky, the stars screaming bright in the clear desert black. He found himself mouthing a fervent, memorized prayer of thanks to his God . . . pressing at the small wooden lion’s head at his chest. It was a cheap, crudely carved bit of nothing, an old-fashioned, oft-disdained religious token. But it was of home, of his people, and of his God.
Azetla was losing count of how many times he’d been slipped out from under the knife. This being the least of them. He wondered if, in spite of everything he’d done and failed to do, the God of his people had not yet forgotten him.”

“He mouthed a prayer to his God, who sometimes seemed so remote and unknowable, but whose benedictions tasted so warm in his mouth. He rested there, the gentle night hovering over him.”

- Excerpts from “By Blood, By Salt” by J.L. Odom.

J.L. Odom crafted a powerful story and reflection on faith, culture, loyalty, & leadership in “By Blood, By Salt”. She shares the story of Azetla, a debt conscript in the Empire of Maurow, who wields a heavy burden of responsibility in his army battalion, despite being a man of no rank or social station. Azetla’s pariah status is due to his origins from an ostracized ethnic minority called the Mashevis who worship a single “God of the desert” - as opposed to the widespread polytheism of the rest of the empire. Azetla & his comrades must navigate intrigues of the imperial court, dangers on the empire’s frontier, & tensions within their own battalion. Once I picked up this story, I finished it in a matter of days because of how engaging, beautifully written, & emotionally compelling it is. I definitely recommend reading this great book from a US Marine Corps veteran & thoughtful author. I certainly plan to read it again.

Meet Old Town’s member of the month! 💥✨

Take a moment to read through the questions we asked Ed and his responses… thank you for being such an amazing member, Ed (and we can’t wait to meet Flora🐶)!!!

1 - What is your favorite part of reset?
The culture. It’s not just the equipment, location, staff, or members—it’s everything. I think everyone knows that when they come to Old Town Reset they will be met with open arms—friendly, outgoing staff, great ambiance and environment and members willing to start a new conversation and connection. It’s a vibe.

2 - What’s one personal goal you have achieved since becoming a member at reset?
I’ve started training for a marathon. I’m pushing 40 so I need every ounce of recovery that I can get. I’ve committed to running the 50th Marine Corps Marathon in October of this year. Reset has not only helped me recover, but also extend my training—sauna post-run is a scientifically-proven method to increase plasma volume, mirroring positive effects of cardiovascular training, extending time to exhaustion in runners.

3 - What advice would you give to someone new to the community?
Put in the work. Just like starting a new training program, an honest recovery protocol takes planning and effort. But it will pay off immensely if you give it a chance to flourish. Even if you only have 20 minutes for a quick hot-cold session, put it into your schedule as a non-negotiable.

4 - What is one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
I am now a dog-dad. Flora, our new 10-week old staffy, is a genuine sweetheart. I haven’t owned a dog in forever and am absolutely stoked to give her the best life she can possibly have. Pup-cups and walkies for days! (swipe to see a surprise)
