Vertical Gallery’s kaleidoscopic group exhibition ‘ASCENDING’ spotlights close to four dozen artists from across the urban-contemporary landscape — mainstays of our ongoing programming efforts, old friends returning after extended absences and new friends exhibiting with us for the very first time.

Chicago-based conceptual artist E.LEE needs no introduction to longtime Vertical patrons, but the depth and complexity of ”Picture No. 04” and “Picture No. 05,” the two pieces he created for ‘ASCENDING,’ demanded further inquiry.

“They seem at first to be pictures in frames. But when you look a bit closer at the middle, where the image is supposed to be, there doesn’t seem to be an image at all. You just see stripes or dots: a pattern that doesn’t represent anything outside of itself. And the more you look, the harder it becomes to tell where the picture ends and the frame begins,” E.LEE (@_e.lee_) says.
“These works create the idea of something that isn’t actually there. There is no frame. There is no glass. There is no ‘picture’ in the middle. But dividing the surface into a center and an outside creates a hierarchy. The individual elements are abstract, but their relationship to one another creates the representation.”

There’s much more on E.LEE’s inspirations and aspirations in the debut of Vertical’s newest web-exclusive series, Process Spotlight. Link in bio.

‘ASCENDING,’ presented in partnership with Frame Chicago (@framechicago), runs through Oct. 18 at 1627 N. Clybourn Ave.

Vertical Gallery’s upcoming group exhibition ‘ASCENDING,’ running Monday, Sept. 14 through Sunday, Oct. 18 at Frame Chicago (1627 N. Clybourn Ave.), brings together 43 contemporary artists from across 11 countries, spanning a broad spectrum of styles, sensibilities and price points.

‘ASCENDING’ features two original 11 x 14 in. (30 x 40 cm) works from each artist. “This show is very much in the tradition of old-school Vertical group shows,” says gallery owner Patrick Hull. “There’s no specific theme to the work. We’re allowing the artists to create just what they want to create.”

Today we bring you the second batch of ‘ASCENDING’ artists, presented in alphabetical order:

Who's going to watch Coyote Vs Acme in the theaters to stick it to David Zazlav for trying to keep it unreleased forever?

I love when artists don’t confine their work to a canvas, so naturally I’m a big fan of @_e.lee_ pieces. Peep the building behind and you’ll see a stray balloon floating away.

Note on music selection: I like the Goldfinger version of the song better than the original. Fight me. 🤘

Dining Room Transformation ✨ swipe for the before.

The brief: keep the existing furniture, but give the room a whole new feel through thoughtful décor…but the moment I saw this curved ceiling, I had a vision.

Big thanks to @_e.lee_ for bringing this ombré idea to life. 🥂

✨It’s hard to believe that two years have passed since Lulu and I curated our mural festival in Highwood, IL; it feels like just yesterday. The warmth and enthusiasm of the community here were truly remarkable, inspiring us to leave New York and establish a gallery, and to line up more large-scale mural projects and festivals. This journey has been nothing short of magical, ✨and I’m endlessly grateful to my PIC, my confidante, and my beautiful fiancé, Lulu. ❤️She is the visionary behind the mural festival, and without her passion and dedication to the arts, none of this would have been possible.
🤖We have a solo show on June 11th at our gallery with legendary NYC artist @chrisrwk @robotswillkill and his sculpture unveiling on the 10th 🙏 stop in and see some of his incredible works!

Please enjoy some of these BTS shots

I’m very grateful and thankful to be able to have attended last night’s “Art Of The City” exhibit! Additionally I would like to give special thanks to Koz and Lulu for setting this up, Jean for being a gracious host, along with all of the special people and amazing artists from all walks of life that I met! The exhibition will be available thru May 22nd, but if you need further information, please reach out directly to @silvertunastudios and @collectwithlulu . Everyone was amazing and all of the artists were willing to sign your books, chat and just be so welcoming, felt like a family gathering, but instead of food we had Art to feast on! Also I’m sorry if I missed anyone or couldn’t get to fit all of the awesome works on my post ... @praxis_vgz @orrdesigns @zeredbassett @chrisrwk @robotswillkill @crashone @bg183tatscru @biotatscru @obeygiant @tkid170 @waneonecod @albert_diaz1 @snapkracker @ramborame_215 @epicuno @giovannireda @zimad_art @naito_oru @kit17_mgsbronx @joz_and_easy @stuk.one @samanthalee.art @chrispastras @angelonce @koz0ne @osk_osk_ @_e.lee_ @jeanlibert @seeoneart @snapkrackart #graffiti #crashone #tatscru #chrisrwk #tkid170
