This month we’re shining a spotlight on Hair Stylist + Makeup Artist Erica Gomes.

What was the last job you did before becoming a full-time hair and makeup artist? I always joke that I came out of the womb doing Hair and makeup. I was doing hair as young as 11/12 years old braiding and styling hair in my mom’s living room. While I was in cosmetology school, I was an assistant manager at a couple different sneaker stores.

What drew you to this industry? From a very young age I knew someone had to be doing the HMU for the people on the TV and magazines. I’m not sure how I knew it, I just knew I wanted to be the one doing it for them.

What projects do you most look forward to doing? I love projects that make people feel something. Whether that be while you are in the room creating it, or experiencing the final visuals afterwards. Especially projects that are rooted in cultural history & expression that deserves to be carried forward.

What do you love most about your job? I love that my job allows me to help people feel and look their best before stepping in front of the camera. Glam is the first step in the production process and I’m a firm believer in it making or breaking the energy we get from the models. I also love being in spaces with a bunch of talented creatives & seeing how all of those individual contributions come together to execute one vision.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? My inspiration lives somewhere between history, culture & complete solitude. I love looking at how beauty & fashion have been interpreted across different eras of time, different cultures around the world, within communities & even different genres of music. I also draw inspiration from being in solitude. While I love honoring trends from the past and keeping up with what is trending currently, I very much need to give myself enough alone time to continue to discover what comes from me naturally, so my ideas, perspective & how I execute something have room to be their own.
