NOTES ON BECOMING 🧠❤️

My real estate team imploded after I suffered encephalitis and brain damage in 2022.

Looking back, the three-year collapse may have been one of the best things that ever happened to me.

Before getting sick, I wasn’t really happy.

Joe and I traveled constantly. The next trip, the next unhinged party, the next adventure. Always moving, rarely present. In many ways, I was escaping my own life.

Professionally, I’d become a janitor to a sales army, spending my days managing personalities and putting out fires. I’d lost my passion.

Then everything fell apart.

And I got to choose again.

I became selective. Stopped living in the micro and made room for the macro.

That space allowed me to go deeper into real estate and community development, build Analex Advisory, explore the world of finance and become deeply and intensely involved in shaping the community Joe and I call home.

None of it would have happened without Joe pushing me toward TMS and EMDR, the incredible people who’ve supported my recovery, or barging into my friend Katyna’s tarot reading in 2024, where this unexpected journey somehow began. 🤣

I wouldn’t wish brain injury on anyone. But I can recognize the extraordinary life that emerged in its aftermath.

Getting here has involved more than 100 TMS treatments, at least 35 EMDR sessions, and an enormous amount of work on myself. And that last part? I plan to keep doing it for the rest of my life.

It’s a harder path. There’s no rulebook. But it’s infinitely more fulfilling.

Sometimes growth is subtraction. Sometimes the dream has to fall apart so you can discover what you actually want.

Kabbalah has added another dimension to this journey, challenging me to recognize my patterns, question my reactions and become more intentional about the energy I bring into the world.

I’m still learning to master my thoughts, because thoughts influence actions, and actions shape our lives.

Still learning. Still healing. Still becoming.

For the first time in years, I’m not building a life I need to escape from.

I’m building one I want to be present for. ❤️

20 years together. 13 years married. ❤️

Thirteen years ago today, after marriage equality became legal in New York—and before our marriage was recognized in our home state of Florida or became a nationwide right—we walked into the NY City Clerk’s Office on Worth Street and became Husband & Husband.

By then, we had already spent seven years building a life together.

And over these 20 years, we’ve lived a lot of life.

The beautiful years. The hard years. Building a home, a business, a family. Changing, growing, surviving, celebrating—and continuing to choose each other through all of it.

This morning, we started our anniversary with a little recommitment ceremony. Nothing elaborate. Just Joe, me, a few words, our wedding rings—and Fiji as our very official witness. 😂🐶💍

Because maybe that’s what marriage really is.

Not one promise made 13 years ago, but the decision to keep making it.

I still choose you.

250 years ago, a bold idea changed the world. 🇺🇸

Today, we celebrate the enduring promise of freedom, opportunity, and democracy.

No nation is perfect, but few have created more opportunity, inspired more innovation, or welcomed more dreamers than the United States.

This Independence Day, we’re especially grateful for the freedoms we enjoy, the sacrifices made to protect them, and the privilege of calling this country home.

Mother’s Day hits differently with time. ❤️

Today I’m thinking about the women in our family whose love, strength, sacrifice, and resilience shaped all of us in ways big and small.

Especially my mom — the woman who gave me life, strength, resilience… and the ultimate survival skills. ❤️‍🩹

From Puerto Rico roots to Miami life, we’ve lived a lot together — and I’m grateful for all of it.

The older I get, the more I understand how much of who I am was shaped by the strength, humor, and perseverance of the women around me — especially after everything life has thrown our way these past few years.

Today I’m also celebrating my stepmom Vianca, my mother-in-law Joann, and all the incredible women in our family who stepped into caregiving roles with love and grace.

And seeing the next generation — our sobrinas Emily, Samantha, and Stephanie — become moms themselves is really beautiful to witness.

To every mom, stepmom, tía, dog mom, caretaker, and second mother quietly holding families together behind the scenes: today is for you.

Te amo, Mami. 💗

Today I’m giving thanks for the people and the purpose that carried me through a year I’ll never forget.
