“Jack and I pledge $5 million to create a new generation of choreographers, puppeteers, clowns, video artists, and theatrical jugglers.

A new generation of free thinkers who will ask the world,
‘What is Art?’”

This clip from 30 Rock is an exciting catalyst for the MEANWHILES 2025 group show. Curated by Ben Lysaght and Fahsai Chainarong, this exhibition will feature artists from the MEANWHILE facilitation team, studios, and collaborators.

MEANWHILE gallery invites you to join us celebrating our opening of “ We know what art is, Its paintings of horses!” on April 3rd at 5:30 pm

In recent years, Aotearoa’s vibrant art scene has enthusiastically embraced what has been called the “Horse Girl(™) era.” This intriguing exhibition, titled “ We know what art is, Its paintings of horses!”, serves as a dynamic showcase of the diverse talents within the MEANWHILE community. Rather than merely featuring a collection of horse-themed artworks, the exhibition delves deeper into various concepts that challenge traditional perceptions of art.

Throughout the exhibition, viewers will encounter a playful yet thought-provoking exploration of themes such as fashion trends within artistic expression, the delightful silliness often associated with equine imagery, and the intricate balance between seriousness and lightheartedness that permeates the art world. This duality invites reflection on the fleeting nature of art’s value, prompting visitors to consider how societal trends and cultural narratives can shift the perception and significance of artistic works. The exhibition ultimately highlights art’s manifold interpretations, celebrating its whimsical elements and the deeper messages they convey.

Artists:

Cleo Bates, Grace Bella, o(l[i]ve) (bly(th)), Fahsai Chainarong, Kate Donald, Eva Davenport Petersen, Trantham Gordon, Mirabel Gu, Julia Kohlhaas , Frances Krsinich, Ben Lysaght, Rhea Lakhdhir, Jessica Miku, Evie O’Connor, Sabina Rizos-Shaw, Katie Talbot, Blake Spurdle, Magnolia Wild.
