We didn’t start this with the intention of awarding now $27,000 in scholarship money.

You know it’s funny how the Joyful Futures Scholarship came to be.

We had a meeting probably close to two years ago where the idea of opening a school came up. Patrick had found some organization where if you give them $50,000, they would open up a school in a developing country.

Like on some Oprah or LeBron shit.

We went back and forth and ultimately decided that having a school across the ocean wouldn’t be a good thing.

So we scaled it back. It started with $2,000 to Joselyn Jumbo, an undocumented student who pursued college at BMCC, and Karen Kong, a 4.0 student at Midwood who just wrapped her sophomore year at Boston university.

Last year, we gave $10,000 to two wonderful young people who are in the crowd tonight. Shoutout to Jordyn and James. Jordyn has offered her time over the years volunteering at numerous joyful events over the years and was apart of the administration for midwoods black student union.

If you know anything about James you know he’s an absolute warrior. I taught James when he was a 15 year old in freshman English and I’m so proud of the man he’s become.

Now this year, we’ve upped the ante AGAIN. As we will watch in just a second, these three young women are going to change the world.

Frances has probably a more impressive resume than everyone in this damn room, I know definitely me.

Joeimie is a star who’s volunteered her time over the last 2 years working with us at toy drives and helping to pass out over 800 toys to underprivileged.

And Yaritza, I can spend hours talking about the personal and professional impact she has had on my life. From those 11 pm “Lewis I need help with my fafsa application” to me signing in to her cunyfirst and fumbling through our antiquated college system.

Thank you for everything. So much more to come.
