The realities of a fit check 😂 When my body has a mind of its own.

Apparently you can’t say or write out b. or a. here without it getting limited so I had to swap them for chest and butt 😵‍💫 For anyone wondering why I would say “chest is about to fall out” - I’m not that fancy.

But let’s come back to what’s actually of importance in this reel.

Since I’ve been deep into making things for the last few years, I appreciate more than ever the time and love that goes into handmade things. I try to not acquire too many things but when I do I always prefer handmade, small batch over mass produced. It’s just a different feeling, knowing someone spent days, weeks or months for the whole process of thinking about a design, sourcing materials, navigating through trial and error to finally finishing a piece and then trying to share it with the world.

So here’s to the beautiful handmade artists that made these beautiful pieces from this reel 🖤

New series: From The Bush 🌿

I live surrounded by bush, and a lot of what I make starts there. In this new series I’ll share what I harvest and forage there, how I work with it, and the pieces that come from it. Sometimes it’s the whole journey, sometimes just one step, and sometimes a finished piece. New episodes roughly every fortnight.

How I harvest and prepare Cordyline fibre for weaving

Five steps, start to finish:

1. Harvest
I picked two different types of Cordyline. The longer one is easier to weave with, because you can use it longer before you have to add more fibre.

A note on harvesting: make sure you never take too much from one plant. Be gentle, so it isn’t stressed and can keep growing 🌿 I usually ask it for permission and listen whether or not it feels right to take some leaves from it.

2. Split
A needle works, or your fingernails if you have long ones (I don’t 😂). Split the fibre in strands of your desired thickness. You can split them roughly in this step. Should you want thinner strands for weaving later you can always split them again.

3. Boil
I usually boil all my fibres after I harvest them. Usually just for a few seconds. It’s mainly so that bacteria or potential mould can be killed.

4. Dry
I usually hang fibres up to dry. Depending on the heat and moisture in the air this can be a day or multiple days. This batch dried yellowish green. I was hoping for some darker browns on the shorter Cordyline which I got in the past when drying it on the car dashboard. I think it wasn’t sunny enough when I tried it this time.

5. Weave
Technically, there is another step before you can finally weave with it. Every time you want to weave you will have to put these fibres in hot water to make them more flexible for weaving. Otherwise, they will break. I usually just have a little bowl with hot water next to me in which I put the fibres I need. And now you’re good to go to weave with Cordyline fibre.

The #artisanstrail is awakening once more!..
Creative creatures of NNSW this is your chance to showcase your skills.
I’ll be working on creating a “mini market”(potentially at the Clunes hall).
I want to provide a safe easy space for vendors to present their work…No need to have all the market stall stuff. A table or racks will be all you need.
I’ll keep the stall placements cheap so that profit actually goes back to the artist.
If all goes well I’d love to incorporate live music, or food vans outside on the street too.
Honestly the skies the limit here. I really feel we could grow this idea into something that supports our entire creative community 🥰
My dream is to create a permanent warehouse space for this event somewhere in Lismore that would include a big rentable space for dance classes, workshops & events. Plus smaller rooms for one on consultations with healers etc.
It would become a hub where ideas are shared and artists are supported to chase their dreams ✨
So if this sounds like something you’d like to get in board with then holla out! It’s gonna take a bit of love & dedication to get up & going (mainly because we’re all poor artists just struggling to get by. lol) but I trust that the right people will arrive at the perfect time.

✨A couple of months ago I made the decision that I wanted to make the place I live feel NEW again~ I want this year to feel different, I want to look back at the end of this year and think WOW my life has lit up in a whole new way I didn’t think was possible!!
So in small ways I’ve being opening myself to new things, making lots more art & allowing myself to FULLY trust myself to follow my art vision even more… & good golly the magic that is flowing through makes any of the hard parts worth it✨✨

Kicking off my 31st lap around the sun with a bang ✨

A month long apprenticeship in Ritual Theatre (with @sistarswan && @maryastark and 4 other divine women!). With this comes a journey across the seas that has my Wild, Free Gypsy spirit feeling ALIVE again, I almost forgot about her for a moment.

I sit at the airport now as I create this post feeling really fucking grateful for the full spectrum of initiations that blessed this opportunity into my life✨
