Artist Spotlight: @_gatagata_

Some artists bend genres. @_gatagata_ bends language. Her seamless blend of French, English, Swahili, and Sheng creates a sound that's cosmopolitan, unmistakably Kenyan, and impossible to ignore.

Every lyric is proof that identity is most powerful when it's worn without translation.

Hip-Hop culture has often shunned blunt sexual expression amongst female artists. Most early female rappers, despite their significant role as originators in the evolution of the culture, always tried to match the masculine energy of their male counterparts. Baggy jeans, deep voices and the ‘tough-guy’ look were standard issue

Enter Lil Kim, followed by Foxy Brown and Trina shortly thereafter, and a new tradition in Hip-Hop is established. 1996, the year Lil Kim & Foxy Brown arrive on the scene, is a truly seminal year for women in Hip-Hop. Which is why the brief moment that took place many years later of the disagreement between Lil Kim and a then young and upcoming Nicki Minaj (@nickiminaj ), was rather unfortunate. Minaj was merely stepping up the norm-shattering work Kim begun more than a decade earlier, now creating a ubiquitous soundscape that has become dominant on radio waves and digital streaming platforms, filling a void that long needed to be filled - foregrounding female rappers who can be bold in not only expressing their sexuality, but in owning it. The latter was previously deemed the exclusive preserve of men. Nikki Minaj’s debut album, “Playtime Is Over” was reminiscent of a clarion-call, after which many others such as Cardi B (@iamcardib ) arrived, coming out with “Bodak Yellow” which in itself welcomed new artists such as Megan Thee Stallion (@theestallion ), followed in that lineage by others such as City Girls (@citygirls ), Latto (@latto777) and Ice Spice (@icespice ). Women in Hip-Hop music are now redefining equality between men and women by simply trying to level the playing field, so efficiently that Snoop Dogg, whose debut album was titled “Doggystyle,” has ostensibly been spooked
