White bronze monuments and grave markers were all created and sold by the same company, Monumental Bronze Company, that was incorporated in 1879 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. They’re all hollow, rust-resistant, made of zinc, have a unique powder blue finish as a result of a special treatment to the metal, and they almost never need to be cleaned. They’re incredibly durable standing the test of time beautifully so long as they’re not interfered with by vandals, accidents, or Mother Nature. 🤓
•
White bronze was prominent from the 1880s through to World War I(1914-1918). Sales fell off sharply from there as metal was so desperately needed for the war effort, and the company officially declared bankruptcy in 1939. These beauties were considered a much more affordable grave marker alternative, and some sextons banned them from their cemeteries outright as they considered them to be “cheap”. 🤓
•
Did you know: While it has never been confirmed it is debated whether or not these monuments were used to hide illegal alcohol during prohibition. 🤓
