Atlas, the mythological symbol of strength, resilience and masculine beauty, embodies the aspirations of debut poet Henry Izard-Bater. The Birth of Atlas: Collected Works captures a trans man’s ever-growing life in its fullness, depicting romance, the body and politics while striking an insightful balance between hope and tragedy, terraforming through perseverance the deep pits of despair and yearning into wells of aspiration and affection.

Henry Izard-Bater’s accessible metaphoric poetry takes an anthological journey through multifaceted styles and atmospheres, painting gothic scenes with uncanny gore and visceral abjection that evocatively portray feelings of devastation, isolation, and alienation from one’s own body. Mythologising the body as a landscape to hyperfixate on monuments to gender dysphoria, The Birth of Atlas documents the resilience of an optimistic realist, emerging from a liminal genesis to awaken and to proselytise his achievement of positive masculinity.

New author announcement 🧡

Henry Izard-Bater is a twenty-year-old writer and artist born in Croydon. He is currently finishing the second year of his BA in English with Film Studies at King’s College London, and is soon to begin
his third-year dissertation on the origins and development of the representation of transgender identities in film from the late 1950s onward.

He feels most at home writing and performing poetry, typically focusing on a mixture of autobiographical queer themes, and persona poetry through the lens of cowboy-archetypal or Greek mythological voices - he has taken part in multiple open mic events hosted by his university’s Poetry Society, performing a variety of works from his debut anthology ‘The Birth of Atlas: Collected Works, as well as some saved for future projects.

Outside of writing, he has been a cast member of his university’s annual Greek Play for the past two years of his degree, playing one of the Furies of vengeance, Tisiphone, in Ines Neacsa’s retelling ‘Elektra: A Throne Restored’, and later the physical comedy role of Strepsiades in Giulia Balsamo’s rendition of ‘The Clouds’. Henry aided in the makeup artistry for both productions, as well as his own personal makeup work, focusing on bringing to life fictional characters from horror media.
