Malbun to Pfälzerhütte on the Fürstin-Gina-Weg

Lichtenstein’s alpine hiking trails are abundant with wildflowers, surrounded by mountain peaks in every direction, an orchestra of cowbells, steep pastureland imprinted by centuries of grazing animals. Beautiful expansive terrain.

We left the mountain village of Malbun with our backpacks and caught a ride on the Sareis chairlift, 800m long ride with nearly 400m lift 🙈 dropping us off to 2000m altitude to get started on the trail. I shook out my sweaty palms once my feet were planted firmly on the ground.

We passed donkeys on the trail, horses in the distance, marmots scurrying about, even came across a baby marmot snacking outside its little dugout, but it’s the cows who are the queens of Liechtenstein. 🐮 We watched shepherds mending fences and rounding up the herds, and farmers high up in the passes still cutting the wild grass with scythes. Mountain life.

We met a old lone hiker wearing thick leather pants on a warm summer day. He got us back on track using his walking stick to scribble directions across the dusty trail. Christian’s German came in handy in this idyllic part of the world, somehow not overrun by tourists.

We enjoyed a good night’s sleep at nearly 7,000 feet elevation on the top floor of the remote mountain hut, Pfälzerhütte, where local food is lovingly prepared in the kitchen below. No drinking water available, but fine wine and cheese from just down the hill.

Lively conversations around the table swapping stories from the day with hikers who had arrived at the hut from every direction and from all across Europe.

Epic summer fun up in the mountains — and how refreshing it was to wander around the high hills of Liechtenstein for a few days.

Lichtenstein, may our paths cross again! #hoiliechtenstein #liechtenstein #pfälzerhütte #malbun

📍 Prices at the end — and don’t make our mistake! 👇

Everyone talks about Europe’s hut-to-hut adventures, but rarely this budget-friendly option!

What you need to know👇

The famous Valbona–Theth trek connects two beautiful mountain villages and national
parks in northern Albania’s Accursed Mountains.

* 2-3 nights: hike between Valbona and Theth.
* Distance: ~ 10 miles/17km
* 📈: 3,700 ft/ 1,150km
* Difficulty: Hard
• Hike in either direction, but we loved the views descending toward Valbona.
* Hiking time: ~6–8 hours

It’s a challenging day and worth training for!

HOW TO GET THERE

We started in Shkodër, the gateway to the Albanian Alps! Book a transportation package through your Shkodër guesthouse.

The winding roads and mountain scenery were incredible, and we wouldn’t have wanted to drive them ourselves!

WHERE TO STAY

family-run guesthouses! We saw a couple of large new resorts, but getting to know the local families at their inns was truly a highlight of our trip.

We booked Gurra Family Guesthouse in Theth and absolutely loved it!!

Most inns and the tea houses along the hike do not accept credit card, so bring cash.

DON’T MAKE OUR MISTAKE!

Stay an extra night in Theth! We wish we’d had time to explore the national park and hike to the waterfalls and the famous Blue Eye!

WHEN TO GO

Typically June - October (closing date changes due to weather!)

Want a longer adventure? Consider the ‘Peaks of the Balkans’, a multi-day trek through Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro.

COSTS *Oct. 2025 pricing

🏡: We averaged 80€/night.
*included breakfast and homemade dinner.

🚐⛴️: 36€ pp - an easy package with all three shuttle tickets and Lake Komani ferry passes.

🥾 Hiking: free!

**Bring extra cash for snacks and tea house treats along the way!

Have any questions? Is this more or less than you expected? 💸

Is Albania to your Europe bucket list?

[Laugavegur Trail, Iceland — Day 2]
Hrafntinnusker to Álftavatn. 12 km, plus a few side quests that made this day unforgettable.

Waking up to -6°C isn’t easy, but seeing the first orange light touch the highest peaks makes you forget the cold for a moment. Dark volcanic ridges, endless patterns of light and shadow, and scattered snow patches turned every step into something worth stopping for.

Later, we found ourselves above a sea of clouds. Time for a long breakfast break, enjoying the cloud inversion without rushing anywhere. Eventually, we continued towards Álftavatn, pitched our tent near the hut and spent a few quiet hours by the lake, watching the grass move in the wind and reflecting on the day.

And just when we thought the day was over, we headed out for one last side quest. The views and evening light were simply insane. One of those moments when a landscape leaves you completely speechless.

These are the days I hike for: freezing mornings, unexpected views and the freedom to slow down and let nature set the pace.
