Needle anxiety isn't just something I care about professionally. It's personal! Like so many kids, my children have struggled with needle fears. And with type 1 diabetes in the family, those fears have had a lot of opportunities to surface. (Needles are kind of a crucial part of daily life in my house.)

Helping kids work through needle fears isn't complicated, but it requires prep, time, and some little tweaks to the ways we respond to our kids' worries.

The process I used here can work for vaccines, blood draws, insulin shots, growth hormone shots, allergy shots, or any other needle procedure. If your kid struggles with especially intense needle fears and needs a higher level of support, ask your pediatrician for a referral to a mental health professional who specializes in pediatric phobias.

My name is Lindsey Copeland, and I'm a psychologist trained in cognitive behavioral therapy. I work with kids and adults with anxiety, including needle anxiety. If you found this video helpful, please follow along for more insights on addressing needle fears and other forms of anxiety in kids.
