It’s still our month of rest and yesterday, we learnt that rest in its most basic form is ceasing from labour. While God set the ultimate example by ceasing from His labors in Genesis, He later commanded His people to observe the Sabbath to prove that He could take care of them without their constant striving. God even extended this rest to the land every seven years, providing supernatural abundance beforehand to sustain them. It was a beautiful, practical reminder that God is our ultimate source and provider, fully capable of taking care of us without our frantic inputs.

But guess what? Human nature has always struggled with this concept. When the Israelites entered the Promised Land, they failed to keep both the weekly Sabbath and the Sabbath of the land. It highlights exactly how difficult it is for man to accept that someone else is taking care of him. It’s actually super easy to fall into the trap of thinking, “I need to put in my own effort to enjoy life,” or “If I don’t labor, I won’t survive.”

How do these apply to the believer? In Christ, we have been called out of that endless cycle of striving and into a permanent state of rest. Just like our salvation was given for free without our own works, everything we will ever require for life has already been freely given to us. Real faith is fighting to ensure you are resting, knowing that the only labor God expects of you is the labor to stop relying on your own effort and start being led by His Spirit.

“He restores my soul… He leads me in paths of righteousness.”
I’m being poured out daily, quietly like a drink offering.
Let my cup overflow, not for my own glory, but His.
I’ll remain at His table until I reflect His heart❤️
Until every part of me looks like the Shepherd I follow. #explorepage✨#wisdom#bible
