So much great music on day 5 of VanJazz '26, but unfortunately I had to limit my involvement to 2 shows: Aretha Tillotson played Vancouver for the first time as a leader today, as part of our Sundays series at Hero's Welcome. Aretha's band drove from Vernon this morning, and then left for Salmon Arm right after the show. 😳 Darius Jones led a fantastic trio at Alliances Française Theatre later on, featuring Chris Lightcap on bass and Tim Angulo on drums. Darius' connection to our city is deep and strong, and it was so great to have him back. Tomorrow I get to respond to all the emails I've been getting since the beginning of the festival, as there are relatively few Infidels concerts for the next few days.

Today is the last day of our LRT activations for the foreseeable future, with the Don Berner trio filling in for the ailing Norm DePoe. We want to thank @cityofedmonton for our opportunity to complete this project - some really special moments arose from this. Hopefully this may be something we can revisit down the road.😊 #yeg #yegjazz #yegmusic

Hi everyone, check out this cool big band opportunity from the Trad Jazz Society of Alberta directed by @_jacobdo_ : The Trad Jazz Society of Alberta is launching a new ensemble this September: the High Level Big Band, an auditioned community big band for musicians aged 18–39 who are interested in performing classic big band repertoire at a high level. This will be an auditioned community big band for young adult musicians aged 18–39, focused primarily on classic big band repertoire. The ensemble is intended for developing and ambitious players who would benefit from a serious large-ensemble jazz experience in a supportive but high-level musical environment. We are looking for musicians on: Saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. Auditions will be submitted by video, and the audition information is available here: https://tradjazzalberta.com/high-level-big-band/ Audition deadline: September 11, 2026 Launch / first rehearsal: September 19, 2026 This is a great opportunity for young adult musicians who are serious about jazz, interested in the roots of big band music, and looking for a challenging ensemble experience with strong musical and educational value. Please feel free to share this with students, colleagues, and young musicians who may be interested.

summer 2026 roundup ☀️ many experiences and friends NOT pictured because i'm bad at documentation but wow this was a busy, great summer over 2 years in and finally our first photobooth 🥰 loving this one ever so much ❤️ stonejoy played waynestock last night & i brought erin along for a dinosaur day in drumheller we planted a garden for the first time, to partial success! of the 6 broccoli we planted we harvested one head, and of the 6 cauliflower we planted we only produced one tiny head before it was devoured by inchworms. our lettuce was bomb though, and the tomatoes and strawberries are still going strong! learning for next year 🌱 joshua's survivor birthday was a freaking blast. enough said played lots of music with lots of pals! NSJO at Knox church... stonejoy rehearsing (this is the only band content i actually remembered to take this summer, despite the millions of shows we played)... & roadtripping for our first out of province show! jacob and i covered nearly 1800km in 38 hours (insane or cool, you be the judge) hung out with this one lots :) obligatory fringe date! more from drumheller, we had to go find hoodoos cause we hadn't been in the badlands for many many years a must stop. our first kdays, first ferris wheel, first fireworks, etc... also i got my ears pierced a mere hour prior to this photo i would be remiss if i didn't include this insane sushi from ester, eaten before d came to see spelling bee wish we'd had more days like this but then the rain and the mosquitoes foiled our plans bonus! :P, 🐸, or disgruntled 🐻?
