Bold As Love

8” x 10.25”

Mixed Media (Acrylic, Ink and Collage) on Cardboard

6/3/2026

My latest portrait, titled "Bold As Love," is a multimedia tribute that explores the intersection of music, poetry, and visual art. The piece features a striking central portrait of the legendary Jimi Hendrix, captured in a moment of deep musical immersion with his guitar slung over his shoulder. By utilizing a high-contrast, black-and-white rendering for the iconic musician, the artwork grounds itself in a classic rock-and-roll aesthetic while serving as an anchor for the vibrant, chaotic energy swirling around him.

The defining characteristic of this portrait is the heavy integration of handwritten text layered directly across the entire composition. The white, blocky lettering explicitly spells out the poetic lyrics from The Jimi Hendrix Experience's track "Bold as Love," including phrases like "Anger he smiles towering in shiny metallic purple armor," "My red is confident," and "Yeah, they're as love...". This conceptual overlay transforms the canvas into a visual soundscape, allowing the viewer to simultaneously read, feel, and hear the psychedelic spirit of the era being depicted.

Visually, the dark silhouette of the figure cuts a powerful shape against a lush, multi-colored background. Beneath the white text, an intricate web of teal, green, blue, and warm orange paint swirls across the canvas, mimicking the fluid, experimental nature of Hendrix's music. The contrast between the rigid, graphic style of the text and the soft, expressive patterns of the background captures the perfect balance between structure and improvisation, resulting in a dynamic portrait that feels alive with rhythm and color.

In January 1969, Jimi Hendrix delivered one of the most rebellious live TV moments ever. He was supposed to play “Hey Joe” on Happening for Lulu and then bring Lulu onstage for a planned duet.
But halfway through the performance, Hendrix suddenly stopped the song and tore into a fiery version of “Sunshine of Your Love” instead — a spontaneous tribute to Cream, who had just broken up.
The BBC was furious, Lulu’s final segment was scrapped, and Hendrix was promptly banned from the network. A legendary moment that proved he never played by anyone’s script but his own. 🤘🎸
