Ya know you learn that stimulation, both good and bad, can come from many sources but there's always one source of stimulation I come back to; and that's going for a cycle. Cycling is never angry with me, never lacking in its desire, it's a constant. It's a constant that when I lack hope for myself, it can carry it for me, it's pure joy, it's eagerness, it's confidence, and then it hit me, and this is where the real kicker came, I've realised that what cycling is, what the bike is; it's optimism. That's what it feels like to ride a bike.

I took a few days away to properly re-engage the legs and disengage the brain, climb some mountains, descend like Nibali (probably) and mutter expletives at the beauty of the mountain ranges and sparkling coastlines that make up the Balearics. It’s completely empty in the winter and at times it felt like we had the island to ourselves.

Majorca Day 8+9: Queen stage with the gang. 3 big climbs (Formenia, Sa Colabra and Col de Soller) on a 166km day. Great ride to finish off a great camp (and me).

It rained today (the day after the queen stage) and I took the time off the bike and decided to actually chill. Fatigue is high, the gains will hopefully be good, and I'm excited for the season. Nice to be posting some photos with me smiling. I noticed not many photos had a grin in them, which is a severe misrepresentation of how my time here has been, this trip has been great on and off the bike.

Time for curry.

Majorca Day 8: variation on what's been done before but more beautiful and more sun. Can't knock that.

120km at a good pace with the boys. Got rolled in a few sprints by @_jonreilly. @craven11_ went off and did the Majorca 312, which is a bit intense if you ask me.

Queen stage tomorrow. 100 miles and 2500+ metres of climbing. Will be a solid one to (nearly) finish the week.

Terrible night sleep with @samblanchard9 last night. Hopefully something that can be improved upon. If anyone can get me an anti-spring for this mattress that would be great.

Now to teach the boys to play slam.

Majorca 7: easy couple of hours to get some life back in the legs. Talking of life, two new lives have been added to the group, we haven't had babies but @jacksebdavies and @samblanchard9 have arrived.

Aside from the cycle we did a good amount of eating, lazing, reading, yoga-ing. We even went for a dip in the sea but there are tons of jelly fish here so it didn't last long. Not my vibe.

Majorca 6: bit of grunt work required on this ride. After a bit of wriggling, wrestling and clawing at the bike for some extra power and speed deep into the ride I (we?) were rewarded with the freedom that we graved.

Jon's still 3-2 up in the sprints. Descent competition is firmly with James. KOM points still up for grabs.

Majorca Day 5: halfway there now. Rides are just getting better and better.

123km today with lots of town sign sprints. I'm currently 3-1 down against @_jonreilly but I reckon there's a comeback for me soon.

Really rattled through the kms this morning before the main climb of the day. Vibes were good and long may they continue.

Shame we didn't have sticky with us @craven11_

Now to go buy some rice cakes and guacamole. Life's essential nutrients; alongside the humble Oreo of course

Majorca Day 4: easy 44km with the newbies in town.

Great to have some new energy in the group and to explore these roads together. Looking forward to getting out for a long ride tomorrow.

Read a poem last night about how the stones at the source of the river are jagged and unformed. But as they travel down it they become smoother, more refined and something smaller but truer. Having suffered all the knocks and wearing down of time once they reach the beach or the sea they are in their final state and truly resilient. Got me thinking about the rides we are doing out here. Going up to the mountains to play with the unfamiliar, the jagged and unformed. With the idea that these experiences and tests will help us as we come back down the mountain too. That said, I'd much rather be in the mountains than on the beach. Bob Dylan said "to live outside the law you have to be honest" I think that's the same up in the mountains and for the unformed. The tests will always come in these places but all you can be is honest when they do. And that's a good way to live.
