Currently on view at @asianartsphilly, “Avatopology 2.0: 9% Grin, 33% Groove” addresses how identity, labor, and digital objects circulate within networked systems. Starting from a blurred self-portrait, artist Frank WANG Yefeng initiated a digital relay among 33 remote freelancers on Fiverr to continuously transform the image through an Exquisite Corpse model, where each gig worker received only the file created immediately before theirs, destabilizing singular authorship through iterative remediation. The title serves as a structural breakdown of the project’s conditions: 9% refers to the 9 avatar animations assembled from the exchange, 33% to the 33 participating freelancers, and 58% to the underlying, unquantifiable infrastructure—the unseen labor, resources, and digital architectures—that sustains collective creation. Please join us in welcoming our Free Speech & Creative Expression Residency Cohort to The Luminary! Rami George (@rami_george) is an interdisciplinary artist currently based in Lenapehoking in what is now called Philadelphia. They have exhibited and screened broadly and remain motivated by political struggles and fractured narratives. Joyce Chung (@_joycechung) is the Curator at Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia, where she leads the organization’s exhibition and performance programs. Her interdisciplinary approach examines identity, memory, and marginalization, with particular attention to how capitalism and power structures shape lived experiences. She is especially drawn to performance and time-based media for their ability to position the body as a site of resistance, reconciliation, and embodied memory. She has held curatorial roles at institutions in Korea and the U.S., including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Gwangju Biennale, Hyundai Card, Kukje Gallery, and Performa in New York. Chung holds an MA in the Humanities from the University of Chicago and a BA in Art History from Wesleyan University. Chinese Artists and Organizers (CAO) Collective (@caocollective) creates art to empower relational community healing. Their works investigate systems of discipline, control, censorship, and capitalist extraction and reimagine memory/memorials, rituals, intimacy, and queer/feminist kinship to (re)build sustainable community infrastructures. From punching sticky rice to channel queer feminist rage to collectively write poems about grief and care, CAO’s work is collaborative and continues to evolve in community. Each Pedantic resident is paired with a Pittsburgh-based guide who works in their creative field. These guides are selected as experts in their disciplines who also have a deep connection and understanding of Pittsburgh's arts and cultural community, forming a unique and individualized experience for the residents' time in Pittsburgh. We're thrilled to have Triton Mobley as our Visual Arts guide for @jinseok_choi_, @jacobsdianakimberly as our Curatorial guide for @_joycechung , and @josephdanielhall as our Writing guide for Andrew Saito. Triton Mobley is a practice-based researcher using critical-making methodologies, archives and computational applications to visualize and mediate matters of labor, class, and technology. Triton is Assistant Professor of computational arts practices and expanded cinema at the University of Pittsburgh. Kimberly Diana Jacobs is a curator who moves with care and curiosity, shaping exhibitions as spaces for encounter and engagement. With over a decade of experience in museums and galleries, she currently serves as Curator and Exhibitions Manager at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center in Pittsburgh. Joseph Hall is Co-Executive Director of Kelly Strayhorn Theater where he leads a home for creative experimentation, community dialogue, and collective action rooted in the liberation of Black and queer people. From 2015 to 2020, he served as Deputy Director of BAAD! The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, one of the country’s oldest BIPOC LGBTQIA+ theaters.
