Experimentation continues beyond the canvas.

My recent practice has been informed by my interest in Cubism, mosaics, African masks, and elongated human form. Over time, those influences have evolved into a figurative style rooted in distortion, structure, and personality. One that feels increasingly my own.

Working alongside bro @_jprater, we began translating the work into sculptural form. From sketches to paintings to objects that occupy space.

An excellent reminder that artistic growth doesn’t always require reinventing your practice. Sometimes it’s about discovering how much further your existing ideas can go.

More to explore.

Something we’ve been experimenting with in the studio.

What happens when the artwork I’ve been developing moves beyond the canvas and into physical form?

This is our first mini prototype.

Still early, but immediately inspired to discuss refinements, materials, scale and what producing these objects in-studio could actually look like. There’s something exciting about seeing the art move from sketch, to painting, and now into something I can actually hold.

An art practice thrives with perspective. @_jprater saw a possibility that could allow the practice to expand seamlessly into physical form.

Sharing a concept breakthrough while we’re still figuring out the logistics of what’s to come.

Last Friday we released an EP titled “Draw” under the trio name Stockyard Drawl - as tribute to our Chicago acoustic roots. 🎻

This record was labor of love that we’re proud to share with the wider contemporary folk community.

The music highlights the great instrumental writing of Chicago fiddler Ben Zorn (three of his compositions), plus one instrumental of mine and my vocal tune “Hey Darlin’.” + track 1 features special guest @elliottsbanjoschool 🪕

I’m stoked about the arrangements and the flatpicking on this record — it feels like some of my best unplugged guitar playing on record.

Huge gratitude to @shoemakerrecording for the beautiful mix/master and @_jprater for the crips photography that turned into the album art (slide 2).

If you’re into progressive fiddle tunes with deep Chicago roots, go give Draw a spin. 🎻 🤎🎻
