Happy Independence Day from Việt Nam!

Just wanna share with my ig friends a kool project I co-created with some kool folks. Till this date, this is perhaps my proudest achievement.

I think as a Vietnamese person in the diaspora, I am not alone in constantly struggling & wrestling with the notion of “belonging,” or “returning,” and specifically for Vietnamese, of “reconciliation and healing.” During my undergrad years I was fortunate enough to have gone on several pilgrimages to the Deep South to learn about the Civil Rights movement. I was so inspired by those trips, of the coalescence of ritual, critical history at places of memory to transport pilgrims into otherworldly dimensions. And I was like…where are these trips for people like me to connect with our past??? I couldn’t find any so I’ve decided to create my own. And this is the fruition of those earlier longings.

It was a dream came true to gather young Vietnamese from many familial and political backgrounds to examine our shared histories ciritically, and pay tribute to our ancestors from all sides of the war at key memorial sites, and to grieve the colossal loss our people had endured from the violence of imperialism, of colonization AND decolonization. We grieved so that we can connect our pain and trauma to all those that had suffered and are still suffering under the vile of imperialism. And hopefully, we can become activated to fight for justice in the present. In this sense, a pilgrimage in the traditional sense becomes something else—a decolonial pilgrimage.

Having went on this long ass journey, I deeply believe that when places of memory, or sites of colonial ruptures are unlocked, they can become the keys to the restoration and healing of our cultural and political identity. But this is just the beginning ;) Connect with moi if u wanna go on trips like dis I’ll try to organize more in the future I need help! I also feel like this should not just be a viet thing.

I joined a powerful canvassing event in Little Saigon to share ICE safety resources with our community.

We talked about:

🟥 What Red Cards are and how to use them
🕵️‍♂️ How to spot fake agents
✊🏽 Standing up to racial profiling and community intimidation

Her witch journey began with rituals that drew from her ancestral lineage and connection to nature. She once casted a love spell that actually worked—leading to an accidental meeting with her life partner at a park, proving that magic (and meet-cutes!) are very much real.

Yesterday we filmed a sequence with Patrick Roque as he works on his car to take his mind away from the looming election during a beautiful afternoon.

Our film team hopes for a smooth and peaceful election tomorrow.

Regardless of the outcome, the Roques are fortunate to now have a community that will continue to have their back through the next four years and beyond.

A Personal Reflection on Crowdfunding for Be Not Afraid:

I want to share my gratitude to our community, and my fellow @benotafraiddocfilm team members. Without an overwhelming amount of support, we would not have raised over $40,000 to complete this crucial community project.

To be real, documentary filmmaking is both a rewarding & punishing field to be in. For almost three years, myself and my co-director have donated our time and spent our own money to keep this project moving forward. This was time and energy we could have dedicated toward financially sustainable endeavors.

But we’ve chosen this path because we believe someone had to document and share this history. People needed to know about the power we witnessed in the community that stood behind the Roques, and the significant choice by the family themselves to pursue justice.

Without this film, the only record is in the news articles with limited space & context stating that a “possible hate crime occurred,” and in court records showing that the hate crime charge was ultimately dropped by the judge.

This could be the history that is told, but I wasn’t content to allow that to happen. There is so much more that occurred in the 16 months the Roques pursued justice, and so much behind the significance of a Filipino migrant family navigating not just the justice system, but life in America.

Excited to share that today is the last day to donate to the crowdfunding campaign for the documentary film “Be Not Afraid!”

The film(directed by Justice for the Roque’s volunteers) tells the powerful story of the Roques, a migrant Filipino family who are healing in the aftermath of an anti-Asian assault, and find the power of community during their pursuit for justice.

They’ve officially been green lit and get to keep the funds they have raised after over 400 supporters have donated more than $40,000! And now are within reach of their full $50,000 goal!
