Graduated dental school yesterday! Couldn’t have done it without the support from family and friends. I think I’m going to miss some of these people… Officially Dr. Jacob Klenke, DDS

Nothing can prepare you for a Cancer Diagnosis at 25. That’s exactly what happened to me this past July. Two days before my 26th Birthday I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon Cancer after an ER visit led to a week long hospital stay and the discovery of a tumor in my Colon. I had just moved to Kansas City a month prior, graduated law school less than 2 months before, and was only weeks away from taking the bar exam. My diagnosis left me sad, confused, scared, and most of all, angry. I didn’t understand how I could be getting this life changing medical diagnosis just when I felt like the rest of my life was finally beginning. I spent the early days of my diagnosis locked away studying for the bar and would occasionally bleed from the stitches from my tumor removal surgery, but even that was better than facing the reality of having Cancer. That is how scared I was. Fast forward to today & 2 surgeries, 2 allergic reactions, and 40 pounds of weight loss and gain later, I’m finally finishing my last round of 6 months worth of Chemo. Finally getting to the other side of this tunnel made me realize that my fears and frustration from the early days were misguided, as I now can see I had the strength to fight Cancer.

As I reflect back on the months since my diagnosis last July, I am so grateful for the amazing friends and family who helped me every step of the way and kept me focused on the good moments in my life. I’m especially thankful for my beautiful girlfriend @rachel.gardnerr, & my amazing mother @tanya_auer. Without their love, kindness, and support I wouldn’t have got through one day of treatment, let alone 6 months. I love them both more than words and I will spend the rest of my life trying to pay back a debt to them that can never be repaid.

If there is one thing Cancer has taught me it’s that life is finite and we have to appreciate the moments that make life worth living, even during dark times. So here are some moments from July 2024 - January 2025 that document my battle with Cancer and the moments that gave me the strength to keep fighting.
