A week of service. A lifetime of impact. 🇯🇲🦷
Proud of the Howard University College of Dentistry students, faculty, pediatric dentistry residents, alumni, volunteers and Boston University dental students who came together to provide compassionate oral healthcare to the people of Jamaica. This mission reminded us that dentistry is about more than treating patients. Our life’s work is about serving communities, building relationships, and changing lives.
Thank you, Jamaica, for welcoming us with open arms. Until next time.

Words can’t even explain how this journey has been for me. So many nights I wanted to give up because of how hard it was or how tired I was. And losing my grandmother, that was a second mother to me, while in PA school surely didn’t help. But I know it was nothing but God’s grace and love that brought me through. I am so so grateful for my support system that God has blessed me with, I wouldn’t trade them for the world.

So here’s to being young, gifted, and Black. OH and being a PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT 🤪. The price went up so come correct, thang ya 🤏🏾!

Meet Dr. Kayla Copeland, a Doctor of Dental Surgery 🦷🪥 @crownedbythecopelands @_kmarc 🤍

Her story:

My journey to dentistry began at a young age. I use to spend my summers doing one of three things, either going to work with my dad, who was a dentist, at a summer program, or going to work with my mom. My passion for dentistry started when I was in middle school. I would go to work with my dad not necessarily to shadow him, but just to have something to do. I always looked up to him and wanted to do everything he did. I noticed how he always came home at the same time everyday and his weekends were always free to spend time with family. I knew that was what I wanted for my future. From that moment, I made it my mission to become a dentist. I continued to go to work with him, I shadowed at other dental offices, and I attended summer programs for pre-health students. When I started undergrad, I majored in English, and took all the required courses to get into dental school. I applied to dental school and did not get in the first time, but was offered a seat in their Masters of Health Science Program. This program was designed to help students matriculate into med or dental school. I took the DAT one more time and earned the score that I needed for Meharry to accept me into dental school. I started dental school the following year, and here I am four years later, a graduate of Meharry with my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.

The #BlackinMedicine family celebrates you on all your success & your dedication to achieving your dreams. Thank you for being an inspiration 🤍🤍
