Five years ago, on my very first trip to Hawaii, I knew I wanted this tattoo.

Not because it was trendy. Not because it was a souvenir.

Because I found something here.

Over the years, these islands became a place of healing, celebration, growth, and gratitude. Hawaii welcomed my family through milestone birthdays, surgeries, recovery, adventures, laughter, and the beautiful chaos of raising our boys. It became the place where we slowed down long enough to remember what matters most. And having my boys there to witness this moment meant everything to me. I wanted them to see my commitment to our family and to know how much their love and support have meant throughout the years.

So on our final day in Maui, I finally did it.

ʻOhana.

A word that means so much more than family. It represents the people who stand beside you, lift you up, and walk through life with you. The ones who remind you where home is, no matter where you are in the world.

I placed it on my right arm intentionally. A tribute to my right hand guy, my husband, my Mr. Forever. He even chose the font. A small detail that makes this tattoo even more meaningful because every time I see it, I’m reminded of the life we’ve built together.

For five years, Hawaii has given us memories that will last a lifetime. This little piece of it comes home with me. #Ohana #MauiMemories #HawaiiLove #FamilyFirst #nobodygetsleftbehind

Timing is everything. I believe that. In this lifetime we have people who are here for a season and then we meet those who are here with the most intense reasons.

Shelly came into our lives by way of my sister-n-law @mitis1215. Her childhood best friend was never obligated to be anything more than a casual acquaintance. How grateful am I that we didn’t end up just striking up conversations at family functions…rather - she became FAMILY.

We’ve been lucky that Aura shared her with our boys to be the crazy aunt to Devin & Tristan, to be the VP of our family nonprofit @dtgiveback, to be a bridesmaid at my wedding, to bring joy to our holidays, to contribute to every balloon party prep and celebration of life and countless life changing and important moments. She’s been present to every milestone I’ve had as a mom and entrepreneur. Never has she denied any of us anything other than a weak hug in the earlier years.

She’s been nothing but present in our lives as we’ve watched her search for her partner in this crazy life. So, with all that she’s meant to us, it was an HONOR to usher her down the aisle to finalize the biggest moment in her lifetime search for love - HER WEDDING!

Shelly, I’m so grateful to have been included in your special day alongside my own best friend. Together the 4 of us have made memories to last a lifetime and I’m so in love with the life we collectively made.

I love you more than words and wish you nothing but the best and forever with James! When you meet the one who matches our crazy, they’re a keeper for life! Cheers to so many more moments of joy, love, laughter, support, snacks and pure fucking chaos!!🥂✨🤪🫶🏼

12 years ago my family and I set out to inspire our community with acts of giving. Together @dtgiveback was founded and 5 girls met monthly to create amazing ways to get ordinary people to give back in extraordinary ways.

In 2018 when my dad passed, DTGB held its last event as I couldn’t find myself in the grief of his loss.

Although I haven’t been able to publicly engage the ways I used to, this past year my community was able to gift me strength, inspiration and purpose again and the opportunity to give back in a way birthed by papi’s loss.

I began painting as a way to heal my heart with art. I share it on @mija__linda as that was the way he referred to me “beautiful daughter” ✨ This skill set is not something I planned on publicly sharing but did as I began to draw inspiration and joy.

Yesterday was the public reveal of the mural I painted and here I sit with the founding members of DTGB’s children. What started with Devin & Tristan is now:

And together they held me down as contributors of love, hope, security and reasons to find my smile.

I honored my dad last night and his achievement of instilling community and relationships in me, my love of giving and for finding the silver lining. I’m proud to be a Matute and now share my work and namesake as a Gueche, too.

Thank you all for your support. As I said to @skoobyd93 this morning…the path meant for us is not ours to dictate. Just keep going and the path reveals itself.
