dear camp freedom,

i am grieving. laying ink to paper has made this real for me. i came here because i know this is the only way that i would be able to eloquently say goodbye to you — my home, my family, my kids.

i have been trying to find the right words to say to you but over and over again i am met with a heart that is both full and fully empty — both co-existing in the same place — both fearing to tip the scale too much but also too afraid to meet in the middle. leaning towards fullness places me in a complete state of joy and the fear that freedom will be erased from my memory but equally on the other end of fullness I exist in a place of empty because there I know I can be a coward to not feel all the feels that are trying to consume me.

BOTH EQUALLY EATING AWAY AT ME.

& then i am reminded of our identity — freedom, a place you don’t want to leave. a place so rooted in the culture of breaking away the masks of false identities. i am reminded that this place is a place i have been able to be unadulteratedly me — and my heart begins to converge in the middle of the chaos that it feels — a whirlwind of feelings rushing in like a tsunami.

you took me in when i was broken — & allowed me to fall time and time again, holding my hand so gracefully along the way.

thanks for all of the tattooed memories, the endless lessons, the multitude of laughs, the bucket full of tears, the joy over the years, the the freedom to selfishly be me.

WEST IS THE BEST — YOU ALREADY KNOW 🫶🏽♥️🥳

The youth I started working with when I began my youth development career are now in college and many are about to graduate! 🙌🏽🥹

to 21,
today i’m better because of you. when we met, i was leaving a career as a teacher & you were leaving middle school, transitioning into what would be 4 monumental years in any young persons’ journey. we both came to UP wet behind our ears, both falling and failing forward. we’ve grown so much over the years.

i know i’ve joked over the years that because we started together we would leave together, but we all knew that was fluff lol. in a week or so you all will be off to your respective colleges and universities and although saddened I’ve come to terms that you must leave to reach your fullest potential. to see communities restored you all must spread your wings in different cities, meeting new people, and experiencing new things.

i know I’ve failed you many times over as a boss, mentor, friend, surrogate parent — but you all have taught me the true meaning of resilience as I’ve watched each of you rise above every mountain time & time again. you’ve taught me grace cause y’all know there is a savage that lives within me lol. you’ve taught me vulnerability — sharing in stories, tears, grief, celebrations, birthdays, cookouts & much more. you’ve taught me to show up because that is what you’ve done for me — in low moments (y’all done seen these tears) & in my best moments (& these tears too lol).

your beings will be etched in my heart because your dna crosses many lines for me both professionally & personally. your countless sacrifices for UP won’t go unremembered & your countless excitement for me won’t be forgotten. you’ve been some of my biggest cheerleaders & for that i’m forever grateful — from comforting me when i’ve been down, popping up with food after my bad days, giving up your saturday to paint my new home, giving up your time to make my book signing a success — or plainly just choosing to be present with me. all the small & big moments will be cherished.

21, i’ve said it since you were freshman & it’s only right that i say it here — you’re the goat class & i’m thankful that i got to be a part of the journey.

Bonfires in our back yard … passing on knowledge to future grillmasters … calling out the brilliance and beauty of who God has called you to be and become … these are some of the people that have shaped our hearts and lives … you will impact the world for Jesus.

Y’all may be headed to college but there’s always room for you at dinner. The Docusen family loves you!!

Super proud and grateful to be able to say that I graduated high school with a current 4.7 GPA, an Associates Degree in the Arts, and with the love and support from all my loved ones! Nothing will ever top this happiness for awhile. ❤️
