Don’t pick a style. Make one.

Mark spent his whole first year trying to find his. Pushing himself into a box that already existed. It took a lot of hours at the drawing table to work out he had it backwards.

We asked him three questions. How his first years actually went. How he knew he wanted to work big. And what keeps him creating after all this time.

The answer I keep thinking about is the last one. The single place Mark almost never looks for inspiration is tattoos. A song. A building he walks past. Clothing, architecture, fashion. Anything but the feed. Look at tattoos all day and you start thinking inside the boundaries of what already exists.

And when nothing comes at all, he does not force it. He imagines a completely over the top finished piece, pictures that he already finished it, and that he is standing in front of it looking at it. Then he asks himself what he sees there.

On working big: size is not about looking impressive. On a small piece you cannot really work with the body. On large work you use anatomy, flow and movement, and the tattoo becomes part of the person instead of a drawing sitting on them.

All of it in his words.

So which one are you doing right now, picking or making?

Guesting in Berlin 06.07. - 11.07.

Mark creates dark flowing compositions shaped through sharp black elements, skeletal textures and distorted organic forms. His tattoos carry a tense visual energy, balancing rough movement with controlled placement and small detailed areas that naturally pull the eye.
