“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.”

In any other normal community, the temperatures might have been enough to put people off their riding plans. Not so in Bentonville as hundreds flocked to the Big Sugar Backyard Bash, a free community event punctuated by heat, hills, and after-event refueling and camaraderie (plus prizes).

In no particular order and a random selection of some of my favorites from last weekend. A common thread is connection to community, environment, self...

The @lawrencebicycleclub holds their annual Lizard Under the Skillet road ride each July to cement that idea that road riding isn’t dead…it just needs foggy mornings, followed by bluebird skies, layered with root beer floats and gelato, and the random gravel ride that “chugs” across the course.

At the Muleskinner Gravel Classic. Ostensibly a benefit for playful children, but it seems like the adults enjoyed playing too. Especially the ones with flamethrowers.

Muleskinner 2026 brought out all the local hitters. No better way to support local NICA racing than by putting on a stellar race!

It seems if you put me on gears, I'll get myself into situations where I don't belong 😅 If you look closely, you can see me sitting in third wheel at the front of the entire damn race. A minnow surrounded by sharks. It was at this point that my plan for the day started going sideways. Shortly after this pic was taken, I found myself at the very front making a poor attempt at pulling the entire race field into a ~15mph headwind 😬 That was not the plan. I had simply been trying to set myself to be in a sheltered position when we turned into the wind and somehow ended up doing the exact opposite. Lessons were learned today 🤣

I was trying to spare my legs for a key race next weekend so I decided to do the short distance stage race this year at @ridelagrind . It ended up being a ton of fun because I got to race with gears and could absolutely smash the entire time since each stage was only 30 miles. I put up power numbers both days that I'm really happy with and finished solidly in second place overall. It's pretty neat to claim my first geared podium finish. I have to admit that I'm looking forward to more opportunities to cut loose and do some geared racing in the future.

It was such a great weekend of racing with friends. I'm feeling especially grateful to live in a place that has so many awesome events and wonderful people to go along with them.

Pretty dang wholesome and rewarding work when it’s spent with those who love two wheels, Lycra, unpredictable conditions, and the flint hills just as much as you do. 🫶🏼 Raising a glass to the rad group at this year’s @unboundgravel camp! 🫡

And of course, a very notable s/o to @dhughes101 for capturing every moment of bliss, grit, and otherwise📸
