Summer Presentation Artist Spotlight

Matt Sinclair is a self-taught painter living and working in Muriwai Beach, Auckland. Drawing on memory, folklore and intuition, his work blends narrative symbolism with expressive figuration, building layered, tactile surfaces using acrylic paint and oil stick.

At the core of Matt’s practice is storytelling — populated by bold characters and dream-like scenes that feel both familiar and slightly uncanny. His paintings lean towards folk art, are often humorous and relatable.

For Summer Presentation, Matt presents two new works that speak to the quiet confidence of an emerging artist showing real promise. Swipe through to view a detail of 'I Will Wait', one of the pieces Matt is exhibiting.

Opening night 12 February at 5pm.

For an “off” year of running in 2025, i still squeezed in some pretty amazing moments.

Pacing 3 mates home at Tarawera Miler after fan-boying the GOATS all morning.
HLV Run Club when i could.
Pacing AKL Marathon again.
Seeing the legends i Coach do amazing things.

2026 may just be about to get it again 😉

We are proud to introduce Matt Sinclair to our gallery. A self-taught painter living and working in Muriwai Beach, Auckland. His work blends narrative symbolism with expressive figuration. Layering acrylic paint and oil stick, each piece builds a tactile surface that feels both raw and intimate.

In the Villa Mexican series, Sinclair depicts the slowness and romances of daily lives, and fantasies.

"This series captures the quintessential Mexican charm of my stay at the hotel, blending colourful memories with folklore. The painting’s vibrant colours and stylised figures evoke a sense of warmth and nostalgia. Whether its locals lounging beneath the Central American sun, playing a round of poker, or riding horseback along the beach, this series tries to capture the spirit of the place and the people that inhabit it."

There’s something special about breathing new life into an old home, and this project was no exception. One of the first steps was carefully removing the historic brick fireplace that once dominated the centre of the house. By opening up this space, its created a lighter, more connected heart to the home.

To add flexibility, we installed oversized custom cavity sliders. These allow the owner to either close off individual rooms for privacy or open them right up to make the spaces feel larger and more inviting. It’s a unique detail that makes the home work beautifully in day-to-day living.

The original kauri floors were another highlight. After decades of wear, @goodwood_flooring_nz brought them back to life through sanding, epoxy filling, and finishing with a matte clear coat. The result is a timeless floor that celebrates the home’s history while standing strong for the future.

Practicality was also front of mind with this design from @pacificenvironments.architects Adding a new laundry space, updating the entranceway, and having a cleverly designed storage space by @fluid_interiorsnz that not only serve their purpose but also look incredible within the overall design.

The best part? Every element was delivered on time, within budget, and with a very happy client at the end of it all. Projects like these remind us why we love what we do – blending history, craftsmanship, and modern living into something truly special.
