We cooked dinner for our folks that help us put on the Hood Rave. A few faces missing here, but they’re “The Backbone” of the experience! From the smiles, to the real hugs, to the love that’s genuinely felt from the moment you check in with them at the door, to the coat check, to the bar, to the altar, they embody love.

While hosting the dinner, we talked about how our experiences shined bright and how we could do better in some areas. Can’t wait for yall to feel the evolution!

Did yall know we’ve never had a dancing experience in the spring or summer 🤔

Sistersgiving.

We cleansed, we hugged tight and long, we had happy tears, we smiled, we laughed, we sang, we gathered around the table and shared stories, we ritualed (cause we can’t help it), we blessed our home, and we POTLUCKED, I crafted: chicken on behalf of our sister who was suddenly in an accident and couldn’t cook or attend with us (get well soon, sis. We felt you there), turkey wings that were falling off the bones, rice, black eyed peas, homemade gravy, and handcrafted cocktails that the ancestors had given me a few weeks ago where I wanted to do something seasonal and cultural.

Y’all know sweet potatoes/candied yams and pear preserves are a piece of our stories…I wanted to tell them in a different, distinct, detailed, and demure way. & so, I did:

🍐 Warm Asian Pear Bramble
(garnished with spiced dried pear + star anise or dried spiced blood orange)

🍠 Candied Yam Old Fashioned
(garnished with a rosemary sprig or dried spiced blood orange)

EVERYthing from scratch, premium ingredients, and premium people that make up my premium community.

My heart is on SWOLE! If you know me, I’ve been cooking and crafting dinners in my homes for my friends and loved ones for years. Definitely so much more where this came from and so much more (for my community) to come.

This Earth, plants, food and beverage, herbs, and PEOPLE are my life’s work. Whenever someone can FEEL in their bones EXACTLY what my heart is offering in the many forms and mediums I express it, I am deeply grateful and reminded of my purpose on this planet.

To my sisters, thank you for meeting me with all this beautiful, loving, and safe energy we create together. I love y’all some serious, baby!

*PS: I tagged all I could remember by heart. If I missed ya, tag yourselves cause y’all know I’m old and don’t know these IG names, chile. 😩😅

Also, see my stories for more joy of the night.

This is how I spent the last day of summer ☀️ Kicking it with my community and celebrating #WorldGratitudeDay at “Gratitude in Bloom”. 🌸

This was an event hosted by our cousins over at @groovy_gratitude and @muggin_coffee in Uptown to promote gratitude, wellness, and collective health.

THIS is the Memphis I live and love in 💓 We started the morning with a guided writing session @byvictoriajohnson (if you still haven’t been to one.. please treat yourself🤞🏾)

The afternoon featured a Pilates session with @ashleighl_hayes followed by cooling yoga flow led by @itsjessicamosley 🧘🏽‍♀️

When I say it’s the simple things? It’s sitting in the shade, laughing with my neighbors and friends. Hitting a smooth lil 2-step to some good music because @_solasteph and @evsypeso really be spinning like that. 🎶

It’s @lovechristylea sharing her nachos with me and then us telling everybody else to go get some from @lostveganfoodco because they really were that good. 😂

It’s being able to buy my food and wellness products grown and created by local vendors that put intention into what they offer.

More money couldn’t make me any richer. 🥰

“They ARE writers. They need to FEEL their words around them. They need to not be afraid of reading and accepting their words. “

These were the words I spoke as I tried to articulate why creating an installation for my students from the 6 Week writing program was important. They would no longer be silenced! They’d speak boldly on the page and would not apologize for it.

When we feel words, we digest them in a way that is specific to our needs. What if I told you that facing what you have to say is a part of the healing process? What if I expressed to you that one of the strongest things you can do is speak? Would you learn to speak up? The page is loud even if you decide not to be.

For every tear shed while walking through this space, let it fall well.

This installation will be available for view until September 9th. Please head over to the @cossittlibrary to sit with it for a while. Read each one. Let it tell you its story. Invite a friend, sit in the silence and let the words speak.

I’d love to see your photos there. Please be sure to share .

One day soon, I will get together a museum worth of artwork so @brooksmuseum and @crosstownarts , get ready. Perhaps we need an installation like this there soon🤔🤔 I have wild ideas that heal.

Thank you @ayelooktv for the video and photos!

Sessions for the Soul That Has Been Silenced

Soul food. Well marinated. Seasoned to perfection. Served with love. Nourishing down to my bones. That’s what this felt like. And it’s a meal I’m still savoring.

I was part of a 6 week creative writing cohort, led by @byvictoriajohnson and sponsored by @memphislibraryfoundation and @cossittlibrary .

So many of us have echoed how much of a healing and transformative experience it was, exploring themes of grief, joy, and reclaiming our narratives. We closed it out with a beautiful final event that I hope this photo dump can do justice by.

As with many things, it’s taken me a while to digest it. But I’m learning to take my time unapologetically. Basking in moments and memories like this instead of rushing to summarize and assign meaning to them. This will be one that feeds me for a while. 💓

I feel like I’ve discovered so much about myself and my writing voice. And I have new tools to carry me into the next phase of my healing journey. I’ll be excited to share more when the time comes. But I told Victoria the day I met her at another of her workshops that she was the answer to one of my prayers, and I stand on that. Her gifts are out here blessing us for real.🤞🏾

Yesterday, I enjoyed my 1st #901Day and I definitely enjoyed all the festivities. I ran into some of my UTK Family and of course Memphis Fam. I missed a few pics, but a time was had.

I loved that the rain didn’t stop no show! Beale was packed, The Cookout was cool, & and DJ sets that night were dope, let’s not forget my Big Memphis Shirt loved it!

Big Memphis 4Ever!!!
