26 years is way too long between hugs of people you consider family! August 1999, we embraced an opportunity to be host parents of two 17 year old boys coming to the US for their freshman year at Alamance Community College. Yuriy came from Ukraine and JT from Amsterdam. This was their first trip to the US and they joined 14 other exchange students through Youth For Understanding.

We spent the next 10 months getting to know each other, planning excursions, traveling and spending time with friends & family while they learned all about North Carolina and the US east coast. It was an amazing year of growth for all of us in so many ways and we truly became a family as the boys were able to meet their host baby brother Nick before they headed back to their home countries.

Life got crazy busy as it does for everyone over the years between colleges, jobs, marriages, kids & international conflicts. We would often think back on that year wondering if it was as great an experience for the boys as it was for us. We have always said we would make plans to go visit them one day once we retire & have some extra time, yet that day has yet to happen. A few weeks ago, Yuriy messaged me that he was coming to NY on business and wondered if we would be able to get together.

From the first hug picking him up at the airport, the 26 years faded and it was a weekend filled with memories, laughter, stories, food, wine and family as if we had never missed a beat. THANK YOU Yuriy for making the trip, sharing your life stories and loving us as we love you. It was such a great weekend. We cannot wait to see you again and it will definitely be much sooner for the next in person hug!

Biggest lesson learned - take the time, make the trip, connect with the people you love, stop waiting for the right time and make the plans now.

It’s great to escape for the day to Boone where the sights are clear and gorgeous and the temp is 85 when Raleigh is sweating it out at 95! Thanks for hanging with me @_mohammer! So many yummy finds at Hidden Happiness Bee Farm then shopping and great food in Blowing Rock at @towntavernbr and macarons from @flavias.brnc to finish off the perfect day away! Can’t wait for our next trip up, even if it is to cut the grass! Really-THANK YOU for helping💕
