A Long Road to Tao was intense and beautiful to be a part of. I lost about 30 pounds to play a mystical surfer facing the end of his life during the AIDS epidemic.

This scene takes place around a fire while my character, Lance, smokes tobacco and prays — thanking the people he loves, asking forgiveness, and saying he is not afraid to die.

The full scene is over on my Substack, and next week I’ll be doing a live interview there with writer/producer Michael Allen, who lived the heart-wrenching story that inspired the film.

Beyond the honor of portraying the writer/producer’s late best friend, it was also a way of working that was incredibly fulfilling. We were told the “script was a blueprint” and trusted to live inside our characters and reshape dialogue at times.

This scene is a combination of that process — words written by me on location as we prepared, along with poetry by Michael Allen from his internationally acclaimed book The Tao of Surfing, which inspired the film.

It’s one of the moments from my acting work that I’m most proud of.

If you’d like to see the full scene, the link’s in my bio.

BEYOND excited to share that A LONG ROAD TO TAO @alongroadtotao screens at the Marina Del Rey Film Festival on Saturday, June 21 at 12 noon!!!

It’s a heavy story…I lost over 30 lbs to play the writer/producer’s best friend—a surfer dying of AIDS in the late ’80s.

I’ll be flying in from NYC and it would mean the world to see friends in the audience. If you’re free on the 21st, come down to the Culver Theater at noon…you’ll still have your afternoon and evening free!

Hit the Linktree in my bio (we’re BLOCK P) for tickets. Hope to see you there!
