“À contre-courant is an immersive installation bringing together moving image, sound, and portraiture to explore forms of emotional transmission across the Caribbean diaspora. Presented as part of Melbourne Design Week, the work combines a large-scale video filmed from the deck of a cruise ship crossing the Caribbean archipelago with a selection of photographs from Laurent Segretier’s ongoing series Brothers, accompanied by seven original musical compositions created in response to the film.

The central video captures the encounter between two opposing movements: the wake generated by the ship and the natural rhythm of the sea. As these currents collide, the ocean surface begins to resemble a shifting sound equalizer — a visual score continuously composing and recomposing itself. For Segretier, this phenomenon became both a physical and symbolic image of creation: the tension between moving forward while remaining shaped by invisible emotional, historical, and ancestral forces pulling in the opposite direction.

Travelling from island to island, the ship also traces the geography of the Caribbean archipelago itself. The installation draws from ideas of créolité and archipelagic identity, understanding culture not as something fixed or singular, but as a continuous process of circulation, fragmentation, and recombination. Within this perspective, identity emerges less through purity or origin than through accumulation, exchange, and relation. The sea becomes the connective territory through which these histories, bodies, and imaginaries remain linked”
