freshmen (2026)

as my piercings heal and skin gilds, i come to know that my selfhood takes after the worlds i come across.

the eighteen-year-old scrolling in the comfort of his twin-xl is not only there, on that piece of cloth that his body embraces — he lives in the faraway rooms, as someone who is absent — amidst left behind hi-chew wrappers, the imprint on your ottoman, the deftones hoodie you borrowed, or the conversation that never died.

i love triumph. i celebrate wrapped photoshoots and finished essays because i value a final product, an end result. freshman year is over — and the glee that accompanies culmination? absent.

shared bathrooms and dining hall plans shield us from reality’s moving targets; we will always chase the next prospect as if it will be our magnum opus. so, i write this as a message to myself: existence is enough. occupying space, letting time pass, and surrounding ourselves with our peers is enough.

hopefully, my insight will only grow as i stride through undergrad. thank you to the old friends and new faces who let me into their spaces!
