last year I reflected on this sport from the perspective of my own personal relationship with running but now, more than ever, i’ve been heavily ruminating about community.

In a time where running is gaining popularity by promoting improvement and greatness, we may find some of that rhetoric as disguised marginalization. With an influx of digital communication and highlight reels of achievement, it’s easy to forget that this sport is actually founded in community, diversity, and a shared goal of acceptance.

This past April I had a pivotal moment running the London marathon. I re-experienced an indescribable bond with total strangers in the shared moments of suffering and motivation. Running with people of all races, genders, and countries was special in that we were ALL the same in that moment…at that race… in that state of mind. We fed off each other’s dwindling energy and disappointment in order to reach a finish line that seemed impossible. It revived my fear that running was growing towards a self-serving and exclusive movement that was abandoning long standing characteristics of support and inclusivity. My faith in US (runners) was restored. I was then motivated and hopeful to continue my relationship with running.

Looking back on the last decade, I have met some of the most incredible and interesting people from this sport who have left an impression. I’ve learned about different cultures and running practices from some international running retreats. People with different goals, paces, abilities , talents , and stories coming together with a shared interest . Whether or not a runner comes from a different place they BELONG in this sport just as much as any one of us. I would be remiss if I did not address this climate of change without sharing my perspective for hope and peace.
