Do you know the #legend of the snow miracle in Santa Maria Maggiore?

The legend goes that, in 358 AD, the noble Roman patrician Giovanni and his wife – who had no children - decided to offer their goods to the Blessed Virgin, to build a church dedicated to her. The Virgin appeared to the couple on the night between August 4th and 5th, informing them that they would know the place where to build the church thanks to a miracle.

Giovanni and his wife reported to Pope Liberius their dream, discovering that even the Pope had made the same dream! Liberius then went to the place indicated, the Esquilino hill, and found it covered with snow, although it was summer.

He traced the perimeter of the new church, following the surface of the snowy ground and built the temple at the expense of the noble couple who had promised it to the Virgin.

Nowadays, the miracle of Our Lady of the Snow in Rome is known all over the world and every year, on August 5th, during the celebration of the Holy Mass in the morning and the Vespers in the evening, a cascade of white petals falls from the middle of the coffered ceilings.
