What’s your least favorite programming language and why is it Javascript? 😭⁣
⁣
All jokes aside, while Javascript is a very useful language (and quite fundamental for webdev), it (like all programming languages) certainly has its cons, I (and other programmers out there) are not * just * bashing on it for the memes! Here are some of the disadvantages of Javascript:⁣
⁣
💥 Weakly typed - JavaScript lacks strong typing, which means that as an interpreted language, errors are caught at run-time instead of compile-time. Even though it may seem like an advantage that you don’t have to specify your variable types, the reality is that it often becomes a lot more cumbersome to debug Javascript as compared to strongly-typed languages.⁣
💥Inconsistent syntax - JavaScript’s syntax can be confusing for developers, especially those who come from more traditional programming languages. The language’s quirkiness and dynamic type conversions can make code understandability difficult. For example, ‘NaN === NaN’ evaluates to false, ‘{} + []’ evaluates to 0, while ‘[] + {}’ evaluates to ‘[object Object]’.⁣
💥Not true OOP - JavaScript has limited support for object-oriented programming (OOP) concepts, and lacks native interfaces.⁣
💥Callback h*ll - Due to its asynchronous nature, writing Javascript might involve multiple nested callbacks. Every callback then waits for the previous callback, making a pyramid structure that affects the code’s readability / maintainability negatively. Even though promises and async/await do exist, using them can often be confusing and hard to debug.⁣
💥Cross-browser compatibility - Some older versions of browsers don’t support more modern JS features. For example, IE (RIP) didn’t support promises, and older Safari doesn’t support arrow functions. Even though browser incompatibilities isn’t an inherent problem of Javascript the language itself, as every web developer knows, this makes it very important to extensively test your feature on various browsers and screen sizes.

Expectations vs. reality ... who else feels this way? 🤣⁣
⁣
I absolutely love my software engineering job and coding, but I’d be lying if I said that I don’t burn out on a regular cadence. I’m still on the never-ending quest to fix my work life balance, but, here are some habits I’ve built along the way that I’ve found useful:⁣
⁣
⏰Regular breaks - Ironically, trying to focus on work for too long can reduce your productivity and overall work output. I’ve been using a modified Pomodoro technique to time and schedule breaks, with different rest intervals depending on the task I’m performing (e.g. writing design docs vs. coding vs. reading documentstin)⁣
⁣
🏃Exercise - Regular exercise will reduce stress and improve overall your overall mental and physical well-being; I personally run everyday, and don’t quite feel alive and ready for work until I finish that daily run.⁣
⁣
😴 Get enough sleep - Sounds obvious, I know! However, I always find myself in the vicious cycle where I can’t sleep because I’m work-stressed, and then when I wake up the next day, I’m too tired to focus on work, which causes me more and more stress. Acknowledging and breaking that cycle has been super helpful for me.⁣
⁣
🎲Focus on hobbies - in order to find purpose besides my 9-5, I’ve been trying to spend more time on existing hobbies and discovering new ones! For example, I’ve been playing more board games and hiking.
